Recently, my book THEY CALLED US ENEMY was banned – again – in Tennessee. Book bans are out of control. Huge parts of American history are being restricted. To join me in standing up for the freedom to read, go to pen.org/action. @penamerica.bsky.social @topshelfcomix.bsky.social @idwpublishing.com

Has Sec. Noem even read the Constitution?
YouTube video by Senator Cory Booker
Sec. Noem oversees hundreds of thousands of employees across 10 agencies—many with the power to arrest citizens. She should understand what 'habeas corpus' means. The fact that she doesn’t is deeply concerning and raises serious questions: Does she know her job? Has she even read the Constitution?

Opinion | We Study Fascism at Yale. We’re Leaving the U.S.
The decision by these three Yale professors to move to Canada is both a warning and a call to action.
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com
Three Yale professors who have written extensively on authoritarianism are leaving the U.S. “We’re like people on the Titanic saying our ship can’t sink,” Marci Shore said. “And what you know as a historian is that there is no such thing as a ship that can’t sink.”

Parliament's Privileges Committee closer to decision on Te Pāti Māori haka
The committee has met to discuss Te Pāti Māori leading a haka in last year's Treaty Principles Bill first reading.
Three Te Pāti Māori MPs to be suspended by NZ Parliament Privileges Committee over haka against #TreatyPrinciples Bill. More details to come.
Yet another case where calling out racism and corrupt conduct is treated more harshly than conduct itself.

Tribal communities risk losing local libraries and the history they hold amid DOGE cuts
Federally recognized tribes say the Trump administration cut the grant money they use to sustain the local libraries that serve as anchors in their most rural communities.
“As we continue to look at what is happening in the current government, we need to advocate for the needs of our sovereign nations. We need to hold the federal government accountable to upholding their trust responsibility.” — ALA President President Cindy Hohl

New images could change cancer diagnostics, but ICE detained the Harvard scientist who analyzes them
Without scientist Kseniia Petrova’s expertise, no one can fully unlock the data’s potential, putting crucial advancements in early cancer detection at risk.
Almost every line of this story would have been simply unbelievable a few months ago:
—Pioneering cancer researcher;
—*Arrested* at airport in Boston;
—Now indefinite ICE detention in Louisiana;
—"Crime": not declaring some frog-embryo samples for research.
Read it.

Twenty Lessons, read by John Lithgow
Key selections from On Tyranny, for viewing and sharing
"On Tyranny" is a #1 NYT bestseller again. I wish the moment were different. But I’m glad the book is useful. And grateful for all the kind words about putting the 20 lessons to work.

Ten Colorado international students – at least half Middle Eastern – have visas revoked
An immigration attorney told CPR News the students have the choice to either self-deport or stay and fight – but that leaves them open to being detained.
“If they stay and fight, eventually the government's gonna pick them up and put them in detention. And if you're a 20-year-old college student, if you're a 23-year-old grad student, I don't think you want to go and live in jail.”
