You can use the monohydrate form only if you increase the Mg metal to account for it and you accept partial destruction of your glassware. The drying/jumpstart step will dry slightly wet alkali to the anhydrous version. But is insufficient for monohydrate.
I strongly advise getting anhydrous.

I don't remember exactly, I think it was 70% on small scale. And 85% on large scale
To reach that high I usually needed to insulate the flask so heat wasn't lost .
You can see me use aluminum foil to insulate my flasks in most of my videos, in particular my sodium and oleum videos

Phosphorescent powders coming along. Blue doesnt last as long as green, but I'm not sure I can improve it with what I have.
Currently making phosphorescent powder in my microwave with fertilizer, foil, and diesel exhaust fluid.
