last year @nobordersbooks.bsky.social sent 600+ books to Rikers; this year our book drive is for teens who are incarcerated in Brooklyn. please purchase a book if you can—most of these are requested titles, and a $7 Goosebumps book would mean A LOT to a kid in detention bookshop.org/wishlists/70...

Exhausted from hosting 2 open houses this week, but I’m proud of this space I created with my students. We opened this week and kids are already making cool things.

PEN America, EveryLibrary, Publishers: Executive Order Could Have "Grave Impact on Literature for Years"
The executive order saying the United States will only recognize two sexes will have a ripple effect that
"Among the many harms it causes, the order targeting transgender, intersex, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming Americans threatens unconstitutional censorship that could have a grave impact on literature for years to come"

I truly believe that those of us on the right side of this can mend and repair the world in big and small ways.

Although I’m scared and angry, I’m also emboldened. My work is more important now than ever. For my friends in other fields- musicians, artists, public health researchers, social workers, lawyers, academics, and anyone else I forgot- please feel and act emboldened in your work.

I now feel an extra layer of stress and fear because of the threat of deportation that many of my students face. Some students aren’t coming to school because they are scared. I’m constantly taking an account of who is in school and who isn’t.

A paraprofessional took pictures of a book about Pride month and said she was going to “go viral” exposing what we have in our collection. All of this happened in LA County and in a city with a strong LGBTQ presence.

But as of late, school librarians like me are treated with suspicion and often accused of indoctrination and grooming. As a now-openly-queer librarian, I feel an extra layer of scrutiny. Last year, a parent challenged a picture book about a boy visiting a community garden with his 2 fathers.

My life is what I dreamed of as a child. It’s nothing grandiose. It is simple. I bike to my job as the librarian at a neighborhood public school. I teach kids how to fact-find and introduce them to their new favorite books. I give the square pegs a place where they don’t quite feel like mis-shapes.

Aware that I’m talking to myself (as I’m new here) , buuuut.. Girl Scout cookie season starts tomorrow in LA County. Support Girl Scouts of America. They support trans rights. Nuff said.

I’m sure this sentiment has been expressed elsewhere, but:
Re: ICE
Educators have been mentally preparing for mass shootings for the last 25 years. We know where to hide kids and even the loudest kids know how to hide without making a sound.
