By unpacking how far-right actors boost credibility when operating outside their comfort zone, our paper sheds light on the politicization of migration—and the discursive strategies driving the normalization of far-right ideas.
We show how far-right activists reactivated nativism during the pandemic by:
1️⃣ Reverse humanitarianism – subverting solidarity to justify exclusion
2️⃣ Pragmatism – pushing “common sense” border controls
3️⃣ Technocracy – framing migration policy as a matter of efficiency & expertise

We interviewed 25 far-right activists in Italy during COVID-19 to explore how they reframed migration narratives while the issue faded from public attention.
