When people hear others’ views on politically sensitive topics (e.g., migration, abortion), they quickly become disrespectful or disengage. How can we express our views in such a way that they foster respect and interaction?

Our new paper explores how to align LLMs with System 1 (intuitive) and System 2 (analytical) thinking styles. This work challenges the idea that step-by-step reasoning (CoT) is always best and highlights the need for adapting reasoning strategies based on the task

Behind obvious markers of intergroup conflict, like hate speech, is the subtler process of "othering" - depicting an outgroup as fundamentally different
This elegant paper introduces a novel method to capture othering in language & reports insights from Russian and Ukrainian war bloggers

Interesting work on capturing temporal dynamics of collective emotions from social media using adaptive LLMs
Emotions extracted from British Tweets beautifully track survey data obtained from YouGov
(I would’ve liked to see it benchmarked against a static LLM prompted with week-specific data)
