Wow! I didn’t know you could find cyclamens in these quantities in the UK. I grew up seeing them in Greece. I love them so!! 😍

This is seriously alarming and it’s thanks to the Andrew Tates of this world. Pay attention to what your kids are consuming online; it matters. It shapes who they often become.
MAGA and their conservative collaborators are the biggest threat to Canada right now.

Ça va pleurnicher en point de presse la semaine prochaine que le Canada veut nous faire disparaitre...🙄
When Alexandra Lavoie isn’t on the street with Rebel News harassing immigrants and Muslims she’s also a culture critic? 😒
I really like Timothée Chalamet as an actor. I think he’s super talented. But I will forever pronounce his name as ChaLAmet from now on thanks to Doja Cat. He earned that burn.
They truly do. Mainly because they serve a vital purpose.
No. Linguistic fear is too high in Qc for anyone to touch the OQLF. I think it serves a purpose, but I would reorganize/repurpose. Never in the history of time has the stick worked better than the carrot longterm. We are woefully unimaginative in how we approach language protection in this province.
I also think anonymous complaints are problematic because it encourages a lot of unfounded complaints. People found to have made unwarranted complaints should face consequences because it’s our money being wasted. I’ve seen people online gloat holding 10 different complaints in their hands.
I don’t believe that. I think the OQLF does some really good work promoting French, providing translations, proper terminology, etc. The problem is overzealous and unproductive legislation like Bill 96 going too far. Probably some overzealous bureaucrats too.
It’s bad enough constantly dealing with trolls on my wall, but if you’re a Bruins fan AND a troll you’re going to get blocked even quicker.
I was part of the first cohort of Bill 101 kids. The reasons Anglo/Allophones chose English then were manifold.
The vast majority of those children (now adults) choose French for their own children: 92% of Allophone children attend French schools.

That’s why I’m really glad that Guy has taken this on to produce some real data so we can have this conversation.
I mean… 🤷♀️
Those were different times. It’s important for this to be known, however, because it explains that many didn’t “reject” French, they were sent away.
Yup! That’s the point I pretty much end with for my piece.

Indeed. It’s only when you start asking people that you realize how prevalent it was.
Yes - absolutely. It's obvious from the data. When you have that much of a decline: >60% in 1930 to 8% by 1975 of, in this case Italian descendents in French schools, it's a systemic reason - not just choice.
Individual behaviour alone cannot account for this level of attrition.
I’m glad the Gazette is covering this. I also wrote about Guy’s research for @thewalrus.ca a few months ago, but French media needs to also cover it. Because this is common knowledge among many allophone communities but the francophone response is routinely surprise & disbelief when it’s mentioned.
