Scan of Post article. WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL Julie Jacobson Wellington mayor Andrew Little has put the kibosh on an extravagant $405,000 knees up to celebrate the opening of the city's new library. The library - Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui - has been closed for strengthening since 2019 when engineers raised concerns about the building in the event of a significant earthquake. It reopens on Saturday. However a massive two-day party slated for the weekend has been scaled back following a directive from mayor Andrew Little. Original plans for the opening weekend included a large civic ceremony, with invited guests, a street festival, food trucks, Te Ngรคkau plaza activation, road closures and performances by local artists, with a budget of $405,124, the annual rates bill for 80 property owners. However, that has since been slashed to less than half - $178,078 - after Little saw red. "I became aware early this year about the budget for the opening of Te Matapihi Central Library and expressed concern, given the financial constraints that the council is under," he said yesterday. "I've since been advised that the budget has been reduced."

i'm sitting at home working and taking wee crying with happiness breaks looking at library opening photos. Fuck its been a long time between 'good news for Wellington' drinks. Libraries really are the best thing we invented as a species.

Proud of our decisions, and especially proud of the team who did all the mahi to make it happen. Itโs so important we join up the network to enable safe, low cost and low carbon transport choices for Pลneke.

The Library of Congress has the largest flute collection on earth.
Dayton C. Miller, born #OTD 160 years ago, is the person to thank for that. Miller amassed nearly 1,700 wind instruments during his lifetime, donating them to the Library of Congress in the 1940s. โฌ๏ธ

The vast majority of the owls can be found in light fixtures of the library. There are 946 of these stylized owl logos.
Screw it. It is Spring Break here at the U and I've finally done something I have always wanted to do: count all the owls at Walter Library. For the first time since the library was renovated in 2002, here is a complete count of all the owls carved, chiseled, and sculpted into the library: 1,167!

March 11, 2026 (London, England) - Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations Grand Chief and Sunchild First Nation Chief Joey Pete and Louis Bull Tribe Chief Desmond Bull met with His Majesty King Charles Ill today.
Aaron Gunn: If the federal government truly believes in the private property rights of Canadians, they should probably stop opening every public meeting by proclaiming the gathering on the โunceded territoryโ of this or that First Nation. Doing so reinforces the radical and dangerous legal concept that most Canadians live on โstolen landโ. This is Canada. One country. For all Canadians.

He is completely harmless, though momentarily unsettled by the alarming possibility that someone might acknowledge the land before a meeting. Yesterday on social media, the MP appeared to crash out and demand to speak to the manager of land acknowledgements, a position that observers confirm does not exist. Chiefs whose territories make up the riding had two words for the MP - Chillax, Bud. Land acknowledgements have never seized private property, cancelled a mortgage, repossessed a pickup truck, or altered a single title deed anywhere in Canada. They are simply people recognizing the history of the place where they are standing. No one is going anywhere. Canada will survive the brief moment of honesty. Until then, Chiefs across the region continue to reassure the public that land acknowledgements have not, to date, resulted in any land back. We are a city of nerds! How cool!
My mum used to take us to this library every week growing up. Weโd leave with so many picture books, weโd inevitably set of the alarm on the way out. Then Iโd get a millionaire at Clarkโs Cafe and feel like one.
