The State body overseeing special education for adults and children with disabilities has been ordered to pay โฌ40,000 in compensation to a deaf man for denying him a job interview because he lacked an academic qualification in Irish Sign Language
Just a reminder that recruitment for my doctoral research remains open. I am examining the enablers and barriers to school attendance for autistic post-primary students in the Republic of Ireland.
My 4 colour pens are getting me through a Doctorate ๐
I've heard that a few times, Joe๐
Research Participation: Are you: An Autistic Post-Primary Student, or their Parent/Guardian?

Will a UK police clearance certificate not suffice?
Absolutely! Send me an email as I can't message you here....
I'm excited to be at the 'Interview' stage of my Doctoral research. If you work in the Republic of Ireland and might have contacts with students who could participate, please share with parents (for age 13-15 years) and/or students (age 16+). Thank you!
AssistiV, a screen-based technology designed to support sustainable employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is being rolled out nationally
In #Aras25 coverage, RTร are calling all 3 contributing professors (2 men, 1 woman) 'Professor' in their introductions, but not giving the title to Dr. Theresa Reidy onscreen. Hmmm...
I'm super excited to see the launch of Lรกmh stamps. Lรกmh (hand) shaped and raising awareness about alternative communication. What's not to love?!
PhD Studentship:
Applications are invited for a 4-year PhD scholarship that will develop and pilot an Irish-speech sound assessment for Irish-speaking bilingual children in Ireland.

Thanks to Neil Kenny and @inclusivepedagogy.bsky.social for a wonderful seminar last night at @dcuioe.bsky.social . Great insights and powerful testimony presented by Neil himself, @autisticdoctor.bsky.social , @maggiegreen.bsky.social and Elaine McGoldrick
"People expect me to think in lines, but I think in constellations." 2 great new videos from @autisticrealms.bsky.social
picture drawn by a child with green writing saying " if you dn't speak lots or put up your hand in class people think you have nothing to say but i. have lots to say!!! when i am ready I speak by bid darsing, riting , it's easier to communicate in there ways than speaking
โWhen I am ready, I speak by dancing or writing.
Itโs easier than speaking.โ
This statement isnโt about whatโs missing. Itโs about whatโs present, movement, silence, dance, writing. All of it matters.
Photograph of a screen showing a presentation slide titled "The core of my argument" It is vital that autistic people - just like non-autistic people - should be able to be at least part author of their own life story Even if, perhaps especially if, they require lots of support from other people
"It is vital that autistic people, just like non-autistic people, should be able to be at least part author of their own life story"
Really important point from Liz Pellicano

Independence vs autonomy - there is still too much focus on "Independence" and the stereotypical markers of what being an "independent adult" means (house/job/family)
Conclusions about autistic people's quality of life is based around if they are "productive members of society"

Known as 'the RDS'.
I remember the 'orange book' from early in my career. The title said it all.... for very special people.
Delighted to see our new paper Autistic SPACE for Inclusive Education is out in @neurodiversityjrnl.bsky.social just in time for the new school year, with @aoifemunroe.bsky.social, Elaine McGoldrick, Rachel Ferguson & Carina Byrne.

Good to see Chris Packham and so many others taking a firm stand against OFSTED's discriminatory wording. No, there isn't a proven link between autism and extremism and it's deeply inappropriate to put it in school guidance.
I am a happy teacher. A happy autistic teacher. My autism makes me exceptionally good at teaching certain age groups. I manage to do the work I adore w/o being overwhelmed.
I wish that for all autistic teachers.
Thatโs why we need this kind of research published in the journals.
The features of social communication that are useful in the identification of #Autism do not necessarily require intervention - and similarly, individual needs are not always met by diagnostic pathways to help individuals understand themselves better @suereviews.bsky.social at #CLTTSummerLecture2025
