But abandoning the process entirely and calling it gatekeeping is ridiculous.
Itβs not a gate. Itβs the foundation.
Reading may be hard! A lot of current education systems teach it in terrible ways. But the only fix is reading more, learning to analyze text, and understanding what said text is trying to accomplish.
It is okay to read slow, to reread, to take notes. There is no shame in taking that time.
If you want to write prose but are wholly allergic to reading, consider if being a writer is actually what you want, or simply the idea of having written (or whatever cultural cachet you believe writers to have)
All of Rien Gray's books against a trans flag background.

You need to call your reps and demand that they OPPOSE:
-the KIDS Act
-KOSA
-the Screen Act
-Sammy's Law
-the App Store Accountability Act
And additionally, oppose:
-reforming/sunsetting Section 230
-online age verification/ID laws

hell even the hot Shakespearian gargoyles were telling you to read:
CALL YOUR SENATORS and tell them absolutely NO on the SAVE act, which is deliberately designed to keep married women, trans people, & anyone who's ever changed their name from voting. It's an evil and pointless bill. Kill it dead.
Let me tell you something. Yβall are asking too many damn questions at every point of sale. I have to leave a comment, make a suggestion, donate to a charity, choose a method of payment three times and then multiple choice of ways to get a receipt.
Take the damn money and leave me alone.
OKAY BUT THIS IS MY STORY. LIKE LITERALLY THIS IS MY TAG. SOMEONE TOOK A SCREENSHOT OF MY TAG!
WE NEED PEOPLE TO READ THE STORY !!!!!!

The idea that thereβs a βbetterβ or βdefaultβ POV that should be used for writing just reveals a gaping hole in general craft.
If youβve never considered why youβve chosen a specific perspective to tell a story in, youβve missed a step!
my hot writing take is that playing with POV is neat and you can do what you want. present tense first! close third! first-person-direct-address with bits of omniscient third! anything is legal if you look good doing it!!
And in red!

If you're a writer, I encourage you to read widely--across lengths and genres and eras, self-published books and wildly popular books. Each author has a different way of solving the problems presented by a story, and in reading their solutions, you make those solutions available for your own work.

Cover of Lo, Nuns!: A picture in colours that resemble a medieval illustration, comprising five nuns in various habits. It is set in a golden oval frame, with flowing plumes of red and blue, and ribbons. The first nun is dressed in a gold habit, and has an elegant breastplate and a curved sword. The second nun wears a crimson habit and a sensual pose. She has long claws, and she plays with a long string of beads. She has bright blue eyes. The third nun wears a ragged, feathery habit, in raven black. She carries a sickle. Her hand is stained red/black. The fourth nun is in a normal brown/gray habit. She looks alarmed, and is trying to grab a cat, who is jumping out of the frame. The fifth nun is in a blue/black habit, and is holding up an ammonite. A demonic, clawed hand approaches her shoulder.
Cover reveal: Lo, Nuns!
@anemoneart.bsky.social has done an amazing job on the cover, introducing us to just five of the many interesting nuns (and the pussy) to be found within these pages.
I am honestly blown away with how incredible the art is!
