Forgot to post this like 3 days ago, but I like the ways the economic troubles of the family coincide with adulthood for the cast, it reflects this anxiety I had never really seen put to words, coupled with Baoyu's burgeoning maturity+loss, my gut says this is the peak of the work.

It's kind of a mess and you feel that, given its origins. There's the structure of a standard mecha anime here that doesn't work for a movie, and the theme of filial piety doesn't have enough time to really stand on its own, unfortunately?
The robots are cool though :)

The pacing was the real killer here, makes it feel slow and repetitive and like nothing happens in a way that like. Yeah Tomino works sometimes have that problem but this was the most one has felt like "work" to engage with. Also didn't really like any of the cast :(

βThe PlayStation can produce mind-boggling effectsβ CGI. Genuinely charmed me until the last 20 min, I was not prepared for edgelord James and his Stand γ Pyramid Head γand Mary *forgiving* him.
Credit to it tho I actually did really like the camerawork and the lighting.

This shit is so ass. I think some of the ideas are fine, example being the relationship interspersed through the film makes sense for the medium and was a good adaptational choice. But the acting was ass, the visuals suck, so much feels unearned and the ending is awful.
