Opening tomorrow in Ghent: Unforgettable, a major exhibition at the MSK on women artists of the 17th-century Low Countries. More than 150 works reveal how painters, sculptors and lace-makers helped shape the Golden Age - even if art history later forgot them.
The latest Pasts Imperfect is out, focused on the closing of humanities depts. & museums. @otavano.bsky.social discusses the U. of Ottawa, @mokersel.bsky.social on the DePaul Art Museum, @meirazk.bsky.social & @vox-magica.bsky.social on shuttering religious studies depts, & Justin Vorhis on U. Iowa.
I'm grateful to Isa Farfan @isafarfan.bsky.social for her great @hyperallergic.com article covering community backlash against closing the DePaul Art Museum. You can still sign our petition here: openletter.earth/letter-oppos...

"Alison Knowles stands out as the sole female artist among the founders of Fluxus, yet she has remained an enigmatic, underrecognized figure in the history of art. Performing Chance fills a gap in the record, bringing to π‘Knowlesβs transformative body of work," from π¨ to performance to poetry...
This oped by DePaul student Jessica Saunders says it all. If you wish to sign to oppose the closure of the DePaul Art Museum, you can sign a letter here (please note it requires a email verification, which often goes to spam): openletter.earth/letter-oppos...
I know it is easy to doomscroll, especially today. Please plan for yourself at least one or many more offline activities. Buy a pastry, read a book, go to a museum, see a friend, cook a meal, play with a pet, or even a trip to Costco. Try to limit time on your phone and avoid stewing in anxiety.
Absolutely!
So, so angry right now!!
βIt has come to be viewed as a surprisingly important museum in the ecosystem. It is small and willing to do things other museums and even other university museums are not so readily able to do.β
It's still up.
My architecture column today: "The artist was picked in September to create a new terrazzo tile atrium floor at the base of the building. The job included a new decorative skin β possibly a mix of vinyl and stained glass β to adorn the atriumβs exposed 17-story elevator system."
While you are watching the game, the perfumed class will wander the streets in a reverie. Quick bises hello by the otherwise empty sushi stand. Courtly bows in front of the gay bar.
Everyone should be following the digitization and posting of the Adam Jacobs Collection. A 10,000 live concert chronicle of rocknroll-live-in-Chicago between the mid-1980s and today. archive.org/details/aada...
From the museum label: The painting βdepicts a monumental female figure in vibrant teal and magenta, shown in three-quarter profile and meeting the viewer's gaze. Her elaborate tignonβa headwrap once imposed by colonial law to mark and suppress women of African descent-is reimagined as a symbol of cultural power. Embedded in the painted fabric are Black panthers, protective azabache charms, and traces of indigo dye tied to the transatlantic slave trade.β

National Gallery of art in Washington acquires a key Mary Magdalene by Artemisia Gentileschi (until recently on long-term loan to the Palazzo Ducale in Venice)
Great book chapter! Had my students read it last quarter.
Todayβs moment of calm.
New life will soon becoming to the beaches near where we live
For the latest issue of The Magazine Antiques I wrote about Ethan Allen catalogs, the Eamses, Venturi & Scott Brown, and the fraught effort to celebrate the 200th birthday of the United States at a moment when the country was a hot mess. Sound familiar? π¦
