Cover for Saros Speculative Fiction #2: Cocktail Edition

In the background, there's a bunch of ethereal blue and pink wisps, like maybe paint strokes or impressionistic clouds? From off cover, a hand in a suitsleeve, holds a halved citrus, from which a tentacle emerges. The tentacle is dripping into a wine glass, which contains an open mouth.

Text on the bottom says:
Edited by C.A. Kane
Featuring original fiction by Jim Best, Lex Chamberlin, L. Chan, Lesley Hart Gunn, Rien Gray, Caroline Hung, Ian Li, Mari Ness, Spencer Nitkey, Bree Wernicke. March 2025.

"Rent-a-Joe" by A.D. Sui

Mornings are a pain in the ass and this one blows them all out of the water.
Two guys in suits, what’s left of their suits, lay in various degrees of disassembly in the bathtub. Joe doesn’t know how they got there, but he usually doesn’t know how he gets to his apartment every night. That’s the perk of being a Rentable with Rent-A-Body™. Joe never has to remember any of his night work, never does any of it conscious. He goes to sleep at the terminal and wakes up with his bank account a thousand units fatter. Easy.

"Four Fabrications on Francine Descartes" by Tim Major

After closing the door I pause, absorbing all that I have been told. I am an intelligent man, with wits perhaps beyond my station, and the information provided by Descartes has set something moving in my mind. There is a world beyond the practical, a world of thought and ideas. It is seductive. But it would be wrong to barrage a passenger with questions. The model that dictates the successful operation of this ship would not allow for it. I begin to move away from the door—but then I stop again at the sound of voices. One belongs to Descartes. The other is the voice of a young girl.

"Looking Glass" by Lia Lao

It’s almost laughable that she couldn’t make the trip in person. Still, you know why. It’s because she can’t stand to see you. You, her daughter. You, her fallen masterpiece. The one who’s torn herself apart with her own hands.
She used to brag about how carefully she created you. How she consulted the best doctors—grew ten mirror images in a laboratory—and decided you were the one who deserved to live.
You weren’t the smartest. You weren’t the strongest. But you were the prettiest and the most amenable and that was what mattered to her.

"Exhibition" by Lu Xu

In her dreams, Gael has been fantasizing about stepping barefoot onto the Earth’s grass again. Here on this foreign planet, the land her feet touch is navy blue, so much so that if you flew the space shuttle across a field you would think it an ocean. There is no ocean here, just storms and rain, but when she sleeps she can still taste the saltiness of the endless sea. That is home—where the flora is verdant and the soil is crumbly and brown, not azure. When it thunders here, calamitously, she dreams about the peach trees and the love and the cars. The crows and the elephants and the rats and the sharks.
