Q6: How can we best support ourselves and each other in the current UK HE context?
Reply with A6 #LTHEChat and your response
A5 Remembering life is mostly absurd, roles are sometimes quite arbitrary. Curiosity and humility are powerful when moving into a different role or context. I ask endless questions. My last switch, I sketched cartoons to process the different narratives I was hearing from people #LTHEchat
A4 often. Also, it does feel like a one way street. I can't imagine going backwards into identities I used to inhabit. I think because i'm considerably less tolerant of not being able to align my inner and professional selves #LTHEchat
I like plenty of the thinking, but employers payments to unis will exacerbate HEI income gaps. Existing job disparities due to geography and biased hiring trends (below) will drive more funding to London and to unis who attract mobile cohorts with more social capital www.ucl.ac.uk/news/2025/ma...
Yes it's one of those cases where the theory doesn't meet practice! And especially when it's time-critical I think it is reasonable to take that step
A6 my ego wants me to matter. The stoic in me says that centering myself is arrogant and I can't judge whether my influence will be ultimately positive or negative. I think an indicator is being sought out for advice or consulted. But that may be about power rather mattering. #LTHEchat
There's always potential safeguarding and data issues around personal emails and social media though, I'm wary of any non-uni system these days #LTHEchat
A4 I've often been allocated certain tutees because I was the right 'fit'. While good to know I have a positive impact, there's additional unrecognised emotional labour involved in supporting at risk students. Anecdotal, but I've only seen these allocations happen to other female staff #LTHEchat
A3 oh god flashback to when some students introduced themselves in conversation as their student number not their name 😭, having been conditioned to do so because email addresses were student numbers only so staff were always asking #LTHEchat
A2 respecting their time and attention as precious. So not multitasking and not wasting their time. Making learning impactful #LTHEchat

Take student and staff to dinner - talk to them
Pay all staff a living wage. Cleaners and early career teachers with PhDs deserve better… #YouKnowWhyYouAre
Q6 good or bad culture? Bypass direct descriptions and look for the analogies people use or the images evoked. I really like Lego serious play, or stickman sketches that people draw when asked about culture. Look for what the underlying narrative themes are. E.g. control or collaboration? #LTHEchat
A5 not tolerating poor meetings, bad chairing or lack of decent actions that are followed up. I came from an industry where time was billable. I'm not advocating for this! But time together does have value and should be respected and managed well #LTHEchat
Good point and I should have considered that. The same applies to a professional services context. Perhaps the equivalent would be a formal attachment to their background e.g. a student services department or placements. Just something on the ground where impacts affect the core activities #LTHEchat
A4 It would probably quickly update their HE mental map, which could be based on 10+ years ago. I think in many institutions they'd see a great deal of sadness, fear and anger. People torn, because they love what they do, but it is so hard to do it well now, and that hurts when you care #LTHEchat
A3 I think the biggest thing is connection - leadership taking time to appreciate real-world conditions and frustrations for staff. Senior leaders should always teach or maintain some research. If there's a disconnect, it's evident in language and behaviours, and it's deeply unsettling #LTHEchat
A2 I do always wonder whether SLTs realise that by complying with political will to reduce funding, they make us an easier target for reducing funding even further next time. Timid warnings from Universities UK don't communicate the damage enough. Where is the defence of HE value #LTHEchat
A2 the argument is that financial constraints mean stability has to be prioritised over people. More needs to be done to push back against the assumptions underpinning that framing. As the inevitable result is decline because people who don't feel valued or safe do not perform. #LTHEchat
A1 tasks that provide a sense of accomplishment, making a genuine and meaningful contribution with things moving forward positively #LTHEchat
A1 working with a sense of safety. Alignment and interchange of my own energy with the energy and direction of the organisation. Feeling seen and heard #LTHEchat
Patricia from 5 year old New Model Institute of Technology & Engineering in Hereford. Can I still say new provider or are we now too old for that? At least always more new than BNU, sorry @profdamienpage.bsky.social 😜 #LTHEchat

Q6. For someone facing redundancy or weighing up voluntary severance right now: what’s one thing you’d want them to hear from people who’ve been there? #LTHEchat

Q4. CVs, applications, and “selling yourself” can feel especially hard at this point. What’s helped you tell your story honestly, without feeling you have to apologise, explain, or fake optimism? #LTHEchat

A3 at work, connections with people who matter to me. Collective action and solidarity through the union (weak though it is these days - still very much worth it). At home - art, cooking, family #LTHEchat
This is definitely a chat I aim to participate in: I was made effectively redundant twice and I’ve given loads of people advice on getting through that period since
