We (@chris.blue and I) did an interview for the @antithesis.com Bug Bash podcast. It was an interesting discussion!

Book cover of "Designing Data-Intensive Applications, 2nd edition". It has a similar wild boar on the cover as the first edition, but it uses O'Reilly's new cover design, and the boar is now slightly colourised.

The second edition of Designing Data-Intensive Applications, by myself and @chris.blue, is finished and sent off to the printers! Ebooks should be available in the next week, and print books in 3–4 weeks. Sigh of relief. 😅

(BTW, this is a good opportunity to support your favourite local bookshop!)

There is still so much low hanging design and usability work in software that doesn't require scorching the earth to run foundation models at scale.

AI is great and all, but its 2026 and every time I see a date and time on the web its not automatically localised for my current time zone.

No cute little control for me to see it in local time or as it was published.

Surely Apple DevRel should be doing this stuff as part of releasing new APIs at WWDC

I keep seeing the idea of ego-depletion ("willpower runs out") being stated like its a fact. The key experiments didn't replicate - the idea simply doesn't hold up.

Why do I care? Because what you think and believe about willpower will affect your behaviour.

Conflicted about the @zed.dev editor. The editor is great but the fact it has its own custom UI stuff going on means that a lot of the default Mac app affordances are not there.
Papercuts in the user experience - disproportionately annoying.
