All fair points! I don't have a strong opinion on any of this, I just hope Coogler wins Best Director (for all the reasons you gave), and have hoped this since at least last August letterboxd.com/jmayward/fil...

Just now logging on & catching up. I've appreciated the dialogue here between you two. Regarding the "white guy" comment, consider Bigelow's win over Cameron: a white guy made a popular record-breaking blockbuster film that received the most Oscar noms that year, and he didn't win.
MZS is one of the best. A great advocate for underrated films and up-and-coming writers and artists.
I'd be happy to see Coogler win Best Director for SINNERS and PTA win Best Picture for ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER.

I'm going to be teaching a US Film History course next fall, and we'll be starting with Lois Weber and Oscar Micheaux instead of DW Griffith.
It's Ash Wednesday! If you're looking for Lenten companion material that's a little different from your standard devotional, I wrote a book that recommends movies for all six weeks of Lent, plus Holy Week and Easter: share.google/NQTQkr4kchEZ...

"I still believe that love is the most durable power in the world. ... I think I have discovered the highest good. It is love. This principle stands at the center of the cosmos. As John says, βGod is love.β [The person] who loves is a participant in the being of God."

He voiced Jesus in The Miracle Maker, and I think it's one of the best cinematic performances of Jesus.
I live in a rural county and I do this weekly, if my schedule allows. I'm grateful for all the great theaters in Portland.
Yes! It's labeled as a "horror" film when it's really just a (terrifyingly) accurate portrayal of early adolescence, at least for many boys.
One of my favorite films from 2025.
It's coming to the Tomorrow Theater in Portland on March 8.
if you want a long read that involves udders, a hot air balloon, and some extremely dubious data on egg prices, the story Iβve been working on for the last few months where I tried to single-handedly take on every government function myself is now online! www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
