This is so so upsetting. So Grammerly is violating the memory of bell hooks AND making AI versions of the rest of us before we're even dead. Someone tell me who to sue, not even joking.
I finally lost my shit about so-called AIs, LLMs, enshittification & everything fucking evil that @officialgrammarly.bsky.social is doing. I'm fucking furious, and not just about what 1 company has done. An open letter to Grammarly & the rest of the LLM hype machine www.moryan.com/an-open-lett...

"The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth" by Roger Zelazny has been described as "all speed and adventure" by Theodore Sturgeon, and indeed it is one of the most exciting adventure tales SF has produced. Let me change one word in every grammatical unit of every sentence, replacing it with a word that "means more or less the same thing" and I can diminish the excitement by half and expunge every trace of wit. Let me change one word and add one word, and I can make it so dull as to be practically unreadable. Yet a paragraph by paragraph synopsis of the "content" will be the same.
Samuel Delany on the inseparability of style and content (via @maxgladstone.bsky.social 's newsletter):
this is not an amount of money any individual or household should be able to have and we have to abolish both billionaires as a group and the economic system that makes them possible
my kingdom for a way to reorganize these so that they're not next to each other, scrivener
Not my project, but I'd like to boost the Trans Rights Readathon. I'd like to see higher participation among indie trans authors and readers this year, since there's increasing pressure to remove trans people from the public eye transrightsreadathon.carrd.co
Some lovely folks have asked if they can donate directly, which is hard for me to accept at a time when so many people are struggling, but what I *can* do is offer a pay-what-you-want epub of THE FALLOW YEAR on Ko-Fi. Cannot stress enough this is virtually identical to the version still on AO3!
Later this month, I'll be doing a reading from THAT DEVIL, AMBITION with five other lovely authors hosted by @swsworlds.bsky.social! Join us and find your next favorite SFF story. There will be giveaways, too!

Meanwhile actual law will take a lot more time and resources to fight and the KS ACLU is the best place to donate to support that. Not to mention there are a ton of other REALLY BAD bills going through the KS legislature right now that ALSO need to be fought
Anything that isnβt βgive trans people in Kansas money right nowβ is really not helpful because in order to successfully move to another state, you NEED to have current valid identification! Drivers licenses are critical to daily life functions and invalid ID has huge and immediate consequences!
Iβm transgender, I live in Kansas, if you want to help rn donate to either the ACLU of Kansas or the ACE foundation in Wichita - the ACE foundation especially is the organization that will help people with money for groceries, rent, etc. More orgs also included in attached img

nothing like being very sick and very angry
Thank you to @authorsabb.bsky.social heroes @beccacoffindaffer.bsky.social and Ed Underhill, we have some slides that can be shared by anyone about this, with particular reps to target. Let's kill this bill in committee.
Don't be fooled by this bill's name-- this is a book banning bill that will exclude LGBTQ books from all public schools NATIONWIDE.
Call your congresspeople and tell them to VOTE NO on this nakedly bigoted book banning bullshit.

LEARNING ABOUT BLACK TRANS HISTORY:
( A short thread π§΅)
MMPB (and PB in general) are preferred by children and teenagers in terms of print books, so killing off a thing they would actually buy if publishing made them seems foolhardy to me. But then again, making the exact wrong choice for kidlit seems to be publishing's main business manta nowadays.
I think it's also worth considering that when you bought an MMPB, you bought it. You don't own ebooks. We went from a model of affordable ownership to subscription fees, DRM, temporary licenses, and material that can be altered or removed without your knowledge. Own to rent isn't the better deal.
In terms of paper waste, maybe, but ebooks aren'tthe solution. Speaking as a librarian, ebooks are the bane of my fucking existence. I can buy 10 MMPB for the cost of 1 restricted access temporary license ebook. See:

One of the children's books challenged by the parents in Mahmoud v. Taylor is 'What Are Your Words?', a βsweet, accessible introduction to gender-inclusive pronouns.β It is literally a Hachette book. The same company paying Alito for his book wants you to buy one of the books he is helping to ban.
The front page of the Hachette Book Group's website urges visitors to "join the fight against censorship" by buying banned children's books that feature LGBTQ characters. This fall, Hachette will publish a book by Sam Alito, who just wrote a Supreme Court opinion making it easier to ban these books.
I'm sorry. That's so annoying.
I think turning off Smart Compose under their Smart Features *is* supposed to disable it, but I wouldn't be shocked if it were broken.
It rules incredibly hard that Dead & Breakfast made it onto this list, and the reasoning behind it made me tear up π₯²
