One of my first research experiences (sophomore year of undergrad) was in Phil's lab (he was at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy at UCSD at the time) working on protein structure prediction for the PDB. He's a big part of why I continued in Bioinformatics. Very sad to learn about his passing 😔
