I took my books out of my bag and I pressed them to the glass while pointing at them. The one cop gestured away but I continued pointing. The other cop opened the door to give her spiel about the event and I said “I don’t see a return box.” She made a face and took the books.

It’s weird. Is not a badly written story and some of the sci-fi concepts introduced here would be used in thousands of other works moving forward- from Gundam to War Hammer.

I joke about the Jurassic Park novel being a handful of dinosaur attacks spread out to keep your attention so Crichton can keep explaining biology to you, but this is on a whole other level 😆 I find both books interesting, but it makes me laugh
I’m cracking up, the Starship Troopers novel is basically one opening scene of cool action and the rest of the book is just the character going through training while Heinlein aggressively pitches you on his idea for a military-run utopia

I remember reading about the demographic crisis/not enough kids in a text in French history and culture class in college. I asked the French TA why this couldn't be resolved with more immigration. The look of horror on her face, & sputtering confusion as she tried to answer that question....yeah.
Every pronatalist argument I’ve encountered seems like it could be solved by a robust immigration system that allowed more people to move here. The reluctance to entertain that solution tells you what the real concern is.
I feel chagrin at my initial reaction to Children of Men -- "a society couldn't be so self-desructive they refuse immigrants when no children are being born" -- but I was very wrong.

It’s Long Covid Awareness Day (which I think should be the Ides of March, for reasons that will become clear.)
Some of you have heard this before. But I wanted to share my Long Covid story, because I think you should hear it.
On my birthday in November 2022, I woke up with Covid.

People describing these doge staffers as "not understanding" piss me the hell off. They understand perfectly. They are grown ass adults with agency and full charge of their facilities. the issue is it's an emotional reaction of a collection of '-ism' and they are being asked to justify it.
Not to project too much, but tell me you've never been on the other end of a bully with privilege and an idea that they will be protected.
This is like country club bully 101 y'all and you're failing on the first step.
