Insurrectionist Brunch: Trumpists plotted to deploy military on U.S. soil
Before the 2024 election, a cadre of MAGA loyalists met over brunch to plot ways for Trump to use the military domestically.
This is just astonishingly great reporting.
All of the crises the White House has claimed over the last 14 months were planned in advance. All of them.
And however much contempt you have for media outlets who reverently relayed Trump's claim to have no relation to Project 2025, it isn't enough.

The Kentucky GOP is using a bait and switch bill to make judicial elections partisan. Ten years ago, NC became the first state to adopt partisan judicial races in 100 years. Ohio followed. Now KY?

The war on Iran is causing gas and oil price explosions.
Our research shows: Fossil fuel prices are the most important prices for inflation and inequality. Energy price shocks are redistribution shocks. The poorer you are, the larger the share of income you spend on essentials.

When your contractors are also your enemy
New, from me: Trump's retribution against Anthropic is over the top. But it should cause Democrats to think about how they will deal with contractors like Musk or Ellison when they return to power.

Since 2016, Republican legislators in several states have stripped the governorโs powers after losing control of the office to Democrats: North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky, etc.
Iowa Republicans may be taking things a step further and doing it preemptively

Utah Republicans have recently advanced several major power grabs:
1) They packed Utahโs Supreme Court after the courts replaced their congressional gerrymander with a fairer map.
2) Theyโre trying to put an initiative on Novemberโs ballot that would re-legalize gerrymandering.

Former Wisconsin Chief Justice Annette Ziegler will not run for reelection
MADISON, Wis. -- Former Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Annette Ziegler will not run for reelection in 2027, she announced Monday, ending two decades of service on the state's top
Another conservative justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Annette Ziegler, just announced she'll retire ahead of next year's elections.
Her announcement comes just weeks before conservatives are trying to defend a different open seat.
Liberals could emerge with a 6-1 majority by 2027.

Gov. Cox rushes to sign final-hour GOP bid to sink Prop 4 signature removal efforts
Gov. Cox signed a bill early Saturday morning targeting Better Boundaries' effort asking Utahns to remove their signature from an initiative that seeks to end Utahs gerrymandering ban.
Utah Republicans also rushed through a new law to thwart voters from removing their signatures from the pro-gerrymandering initiative if the removal form had prepaid postage.
Opponents sent prepaid forms amid reports that Republicans were tricking voters into signing www.sltrib.com/news/politic...

North Carolina Republicans won the governorโs office in 2012 & used the election boards to suppress voters by cutting early voting & removing polling places from colleges/Black communities.
They had no problem with gubernatorial control until Dems won & reversed that. Now the GOP is doing it again

In December 2024, as part of hurricane relief legislation, the Republican-controlled legislature stripped the Democratic governorโs power to choose the majority of the state election board, as well as the 100 county election boards, handing that power to the elected Republican state auditor.
Supporters of the change have argued that they reflect the state foundersโ intention to keep the governorโs office weak after having suffered the abuses of British monarchs. The state auditor, Dave Boliek, has said his appointments would โuphold the law and put their focus toward counting legal votes, efficient tabulation and consistency across counties.โ
Those boards have already made small but significant changes like removing polling places at some universities, including North Carolina A&T State, a historically Black institution. Board members cited cost efficiency, among other reasons, for the decision.
Describing the GOP takeover of NC elections this way & only citing the GOPโs arguments is absurd.
Theyโve tried to strip the governorโs power since Dems won in 2016 & did it in a lame-duck session after losing in 2024. Courts had previously blocked it & voters opposed a GOP constitutional amendment

Headline: Trump Wants to โTake Overโ Elections. These States are Prime Targets.
Subheadline: President Trump thinks Republicans should control voting procedures in parts of the United States. But where? Here are some possibilities.
No mention in the headline/subhead that Trumpโs takeover plot is wildly unconstitutional.
The story is better & discusses GOP election subversion but still doesnโt note a fed takeover is unconstitutional (or that NCโs GOP takeover attempts were ruled illegal until they flipped the NC Supreme Court)
