Well folks, this closes my coverage of the Highland Park City Council meeting meeting for March 2. Learn more about our coverage of local meetings at documenters.org
The meeting was adjourned at 8:44pm
The council voted to move the ICE matter to the next workshop on March 14 and adjourned the meeting
The motion passed over the objections of Ash-Shafii
Thomas says that if the route is approved, there would need to be a further special meeting at which the council will expect significant due diligence and assurances from Detroit and Wayne County of help from law enforcement
The proceedings have deteriorated into shouting between Ash-Shafii and staff. Thomas had to tell the gallery to stop interfering. Ash-Shafii told staff who was trying to explain the route "don't get cocky"
Thomas also has concerns about the disruption to weekend traffic
Now Council members have questions about the proposed Michigan Week Parade being moved to Woodward.
Next commenter criticized Thomas for being rude to the other councilmembers
Second round of public comment.
First commenter said an issue he has at his home had been resolved
Items 6a and 6b also passed
The measure passed after Thomas called the vote
... saying that if the councilmembers lack the ability to read or comprehend the documents they are tasked with reviewing and approving they should not have run for election.
Councilmember Martin accused Thomas of being "triggered" and claimed that the matter had not been adequately explained.
It's tense. Councilmembers Martin and Ash-Shafii seem unfamiliar with the nature or purpose of the documents in front of them, and Thomas sharply criticized them for not being prepared to vote on the matter...
Passed unanimously except for Ash-Shafii.
Now the document is up for adoption
After some clarification, the item was voted to be reconsidered, which passed and now the motion to untable the matter is being repeated
A resolution to remove the Highland Park Economic Development Strategy Plan document from the table failed, and Chairperson Jamal Thomas sharply criticized the council for repeatedly failing to approve the plan , despite several workshops on the matter.
First commenter voices their support for the parade
Now moving on to public comment
The mayor announced a new street light going up, which was applauded by the council.
The agenda was approved unanimously
The chair recommended that, after the first reading is approved, a workshop should be held to avoid running afoul of federal prohibitions
The latter ordinance is being read into the record now
The added item is approval of a parade route. Councilmember Khursheed Ash-Shafii walked in another item, this time an ordinance to prohibit the establishment of any ICE or CBP facility in the city
First order of business is to add an item to the agenda
He meeting was called to order at 7:02pm
