IME, the difference between R&D initiatives and product feature discovery work is that R&D is about big swings. R&D yields new capability, IP, infrastructure & ops even, to enable varying product applications. It’s likely to be more generative. There’s more appetite to discard things tried & failed.
Influencers don’t have to live most large platform, large company problems, or living a problem across the evolution of a business. Those types of learnings you have to live through. You gain insight from hindsight.
The real value-add process looks something like this:
- Find out what people are doing.
- Understand why they are doing it.
- If there's a better thing to be doing, figure out why they are not doing that instead.
