Coming up on 30 years since the Dunblane school shooting massacre (13th March 1996) and watching another documentary about it. The families wanted to end legal handgun ownership and we passed those laws. We’ve not had a school shooting since. I ache for all Americans who cannot get this done there.

I was actually talking about the British media, which is doing its usual gung-ho stuff about backing “the special relationship” with the US. However, a few polls have already shown that a majority of the public don’t want British troops involved in any war in Iran or the Middle East!
Most of the media is demanding that everybody supports the war effort. Well, sod that. This is an illegal conflict, launched by a decrepit American to distract from his domestic problems, which has already killed hundreds of women and children. I didn’t back the Iraq war in 2003. Nor this one!
So, Johnson, Farage, Badenoch, the Telegraph… howl about the UK being “an irrelevance on the world stage”.
Remind me again who decided to isolate us with a strategically and economically idiotic Brexit, relying on a trade deal with the US to save us from exactly the kind of weakness they now bemoan.

Wildflowers, a couple of springs ago, in the churchyard in Buckfastleigh, Devon. This is actually a very spooky spot in winter as it's the resting place of the allegedly Satanic Squire Richard Cabell - inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle's Baskerville legend - whose corpse is boxed in by a somewhat incongruous structure, a little pagoda-ish, but also not unlike the kind of public toilet you might find in a small British town, which sits on the south side of the church. Do NOT walk around it backwards as the Devil will bite your fingers and Cabell will release his hell hounds. Also, the church has been burned down by Satanists not once but TWICE in the last couple of centuries. (I wrote about all this in more detail in my book 21st-Century Yokel, and a couple of the scarier gravestones inspired bits in my novel Villager.
