That was back in the days where freelancers had to ship their originals. Turning in digital files alleviated a lot of that uncertainty.

White zip was hard to stat (and later to scan). I used some on a few RPG illos and always provided a stat because no one on those staffs knew how to shoot it. Even then, they screwed it up. There was one Deadlands illo with a ghost that looked like shit because they ignored the stat I included.
I think the ToD splash page has a white zipatone on it

While the infinite monkeys theory can be applied to drawing (repetition), taking deliberate approach, consciously thinking about the planes of the face, etc.
Additionally, as comic artists, it’s easy to focus solely on the contours, but it’s important to think about the figure in 3 dimensions.
