Houston writers and artists! I’m organizing a pop culture con for March 28. Vendor booths $100, creator tables $50, creator booth bring-your-own-table $25. Katy. Interested?
@rinthpress
Founder Comicpalooza. Now I write and publish. Explorers of Rinth, Saga of Bjorn Unfrid by John Simons. Outfauxed by Corrie Peters. If Donald Barthelme liked my writing when I was 21, why aren’t you reading my books now that I know what I’m doing?

Houston creators! I’m putting on a con again! Artists, writers, filmmakers, crafters, let me know if you’re interested in a pop culture con in Katy this April!
I thought that when I tapped on the pic I was going to hear the performance!
Thanks! It’s going to be pretty bad up in Lubbock. Down here in Houston we’re probably going to get one bad day, but school has already been cancelled for Monday so I’m feeling ok
I see your super power. You open with a vivid characterization that brings the character to life and makes them memorable. Every writer should practice that focus
I love both these concepts! My first novel (the one I did not publish) was about a fired (chicken) geneticist who inherits grandma’s farm and stocks it with chickens that have been regressed to a nonavian chickenasaurus state and turns it into a commercial petting zoo kind of thing.
I was just wondering what it was about and where it was published
Whichever one you like the best
Oh a different note, do you mind telling a little about the story that was pushcart nominated?
She’s a bernedoodle but she doesn’t show much of her poodle heritage. She is an opinionated stinker to be honest. But she’s also a super sweet puppy
Worth every second
Since I love your dog photos so much I’m just going to reply with dog photos. Even though I missed the split second that looked like they were having a conversation with each other and just got this boring, poorly shot pic.
Merchandising changed my books. I created a candy based on my book’s main character, and the candy outsold the book. Now I’m looking at storytelling in a much broader way. It’s smart retailing.
Also, delicious!

I have a 17 year old son. Everything is cheese, especially the jokes
I can’t even get reviews. I’ve stopped chasing them. Allen and Josh both told me they weren’t accepting submissions when I queried. You are definitely doing something right
Lol
You have been on fire!
We had to have our golden doodle put to sleep in July due to obstruction. Your dog always reminds me of her. Every time I see your dog posts it brings her to mind. Thank you so much!
I write sci fi
Yeah, right?
When I ran Comicpalooza, I made it about comic characters not just comic books. I see my own books that way too; I intend for them to be more than characters in novels. I want them to be woven into many things.
Excluding movies, what is the best way you have seen characters expanded beyond books?
IDK about the keyboard. I think the cable jacks have changed standards but I’ve never been a hardware guy.
I just remembered I’ve still got a Pentium with 12 MB RAM stored in my office. Wish I’d kept my old Macintosh
I wanted one of those so bad!
My 2025 Statement of Achievements!
1. I did a thing
2. There was cheese
Oh, you might find this funny too. My second book is an urban fantasy set on the UH campus in 1985. I have one of my characters run into Albee but not recognize him. It was inspired by meeting him in the theater.
That’s arguably not my best story like that. I went to UH in the Honors College so as an undergrad I could petition to take grad courses. UH is #2 in creative writing so I took a creative writing class. Ended up with Donald Barthelme for a whole semester and didn’t realize who he was.
In college I went to a 1st night student theatrical production. Almost no one was there except my 3 friends and me & 1 theater prof. It was Edward Albee. We had a long chat at intermission. I spoke to a historical figure while they were still alive but was woefully unprepared for the conversation.
And by the way, I was referring to myself!
