First of three episodes about Sparta is now out. In these I'll be weighing up what we know about Sparta versus common depictions of it. Up first is the Spartan education system, communal mess and Krypteia. #sparta #ancientgreece #krypteia #agoge #syssitia

I remember being told that a basic chocolate milkshake was equally good as a recovery drink than most of the expensive options (this was years back though).
Having a cuppa at a cafe in Brighton called Boudica. Lovely place, but perhaps a different tshirt the next time I pop in π #brighton #boudicca #ancientrome

Have an upcoming school volunteering day, been asked to talk about the later Roman empire. This is my slide image for the 3rd century AD #ancientrome #brighton
Excellent ideas, my podcast has always had the angle of trying to do something different with mainstream topics as well.
A recreated Roman watchtower from Burgsalach on the German frontier. Similar structures existed across the Gask Ridge in Perthshire
I've got lots of researched content from my podcast epsiodes and articles from my old website. I wondered if this could form a book of random articles/essays about the ancient world. Thoughts from publishers welcome (though not expected) ππΊπ
Neck amphora from Athens, dated to circa 700BC. A chariot procession ensues whilst on the neck whilst a lion attacks a deer. #ancientgreece #ancienthistory
Image is a fresco depicting two Lares flanking a genius. A snake depicted beneath the figures approaches an altar. This artefact comes from the House of the Vettii, Pompeii.
Ever wondered what Roman religion was like *before* they meet the Greeks? This is a fascinating side to early Roman history and we chat about what we do know and what we can know when it comes to truly Roman practices in relation to the gods.
A beautiful Byzantine necklace (dated C6-7th AD), made of amethyst, glass, & gold beads linked by delicate gold thread. A lovely piece of ancient jewellery! (π· NY Met Museum) #AncientBlueSky

Need to find somewhere that will do it and not requiring me to order 500 of them πππ. Btw, you should come on the podcast!
Would getting a baseball cap with the Ancient History Hound logo on it to wear in Rome be indulgent? Yes. Will I be looking to do it anyway? Also yes. #rome #ancientrome #ancienthistoryhound
Fortlet -still one of my favourite words!
Find out what's in store for the Ancient History Hound podcast in 2026. Looking at you Sparta. #ancientgreece #ancientrome #sparta #ancienthistory
Pics from a couple of visits to schools in Brighton & Hove. Been volunteering for 10 years and it's great to support teachers and help Year 3s with their ancient Rome topics. #ancientrome #brighton #schoolvisit #volunteering
Description from the Hull Museums Collection: βThe mosaic panel at the bottom is unique in Britain and shows an eventful chariot race. The racecourse is indicated by the 'spina' or central island, and the 'metae' or turning posts. The four chariots may represent the four factions in the Roman racing world, each conventionally distinguished by the colour of the charioteers' tunics. The scene is laid out rather like a comic strip. One chariot has lost a wheel and overturned, pitching out the charioteer. An attendant dismounts to rescue him, while another lassos runaway horses. The charioteer who has successfully rounded the end of the 'spina' on the left gives his horses free rein, while the team approaching the other end are reined in for the turn. This scene, so full of action, movement and drama has to be one of the most engaging yet found in Romano-British art.β

β¨The Chariot Raceβ¨
This chariot race is part of the famously large mosaic found in Britain called the Horkstow mosaic. Featuring all the thrill of chariot racing including the spina (central island) and the metea (turning points). Happy #MosaicMonday indeed!

This relief depicts a maenad dancing wildly with her head thrown right back and her flowing gown swishing around her from the movement. She holds a thyrsus in her right hand, an object often connected with Dionysos in iconography.
β¨The dance of the maenadsβ¨
This is one of four reliefs depicting maenads dancing held by the Museo del Prado. The exceptional detail and sense of flowing movement is simply exquisite.
