When asked what animation style DiC would be using for their Super Mario Bros 3 cartoon, they presumably said "all of them".
On this week's SUPER MARIO MOMENT, we discuss the strange fever dream that was the day Milli Vanilli visited the Mushroom Kingdom:

We say farewell to Spider-Man and His Amazing Friendsβ¦ and hello to Icemanβs sister, Lightwave! The Spider-Friends get swept up in a SHIELD plot with aggressive brainwashing, a defense satellite, and a very serious Bobby Drake.

We wanted something cute and cozy with a hearty helping of fantasy this month, so we read 'How to Lose a Goblin in Ten Days' by Jessie Sylva, a 2026 fantasy romance about a halfling and goblin forced to share a cottage... and a bed!? πΊπβοΈ

The dude needs to shut up.
And preferably stop being in a position of influence at all.
Shoutout to @derekbgayle.bsky.social who usually receives the worst raw version of my reactions to these shitty Pixar moments and gets my head screwed back on right <3
I think thatβs definitely a piece of it. And I think that apparent unwillingness or inability to do that interrogation means that Docter will never allow himself to understand that when he talks about βuniversal storiesβ and considers βthe audienceβ, heβs only considering cishet white ones.
I know that corporations donβt care about us, and I operate that way without issue 99.9% of the time. But thereβs this little kid version of me that idolized the place who gets hurt every time Pixar does this shit.
Maybe itβs good they havenβt killed that kid yet, but theyβre trying their hardest.
Oh yeah, heβs been very clear going back at least a couple movies (and a TV show) that this is their reason. Itβs tremendously shitty.
"I thought Earth was the problem. What if it's me?"
This is a devastating line to include in the movie when you learn that according to executives, the character of Elio was too queer-coded. His interests? How he expressed? Who Elio was? Pixar said "No, you're right, kiddo. You were the problem."
This obviously isnβt just about Pete Docterβthe impact of the decisions he represents and the words he uses to justify them make Pixar a worse studio and do real damage to marginalized creators and audiencesβbut Iβve spent a lot of time talking about the guy, so that interpretation really struck me.
Itβs also worth noting that Monsters was initially a much more personal-to-Docter film about conquering fears, and he scrapped it in favor of a buddy film.
I just think thatβs an interesting bit of lore considering the conversation. Anywayβ¦
I didnβt used to buy that. Up too effectively explores loss as a way to hold yourself back and the dehumanization of elderly folks to be purely built on, βWouldnβt Carl be a funny protagonist?β
It doesnβt make the movie less effective, but maybe I do believe him now. The dudeβs just not that deep.
But Docterβs movies all sort of come from a place of not knowing and remain at a distance outside himself regardless of how emotionally resonant the movies become.
Up didnβt start from a place of coping with loss or anxiety about aging. He and Bob Peterson thought a cranky old man would be funny.
