Man, one of the most depressing aspects of modern scholarship is finding a great article and then looking up the scholar to see what else they’ve done and just catching a glimpse of an abbreviated career hopping between visiting positions and publishing great pieces before disappearing from academia

Had a very engaged, active group of students for my postwar Japanese literature course this term, so I gave myself a little treat on the last day today by asking them to do a minute write of "the one idea you think will stick with you the most". Ego-boostingly thoughtful responses across the board 😁

I'm a bit late to this announcement but wanted to share that the newest issue of the JJS is now out! Very proud of the essays and book reviews inside. My coeditor Sabine Frühstück, the book review editor Jessamyn Abel, and our managing editors David and now Athena all did incredible work.

My grandfather used to say that before anyone runs for public office, they should be required to spend 6 months working a customer service job. In addition to all these skills, I think it teaches you a baseline level of human empathy.
