A master at dissection, if he found a dead deer or muntjac on the side of the road he would put it in his boot, hang, skin and butcher it at home and pop it into the freezer. Sometimes dinner was a pigeon he had shot with an airgun.π

The key to a good costume, said Phyllis Dalton, is that no one should take any notice of it. It should be like a fish in water: natural, slick and so subtle as to be almost invisible >> obit I wrote on this costume designer Queen

This has been the toughest day of reporting I've ever done, with so many grim details of these poor little girls' murders read out in court and the myriad ways their killer should have been stopped. The composure of the families in the face of it all was awe-inspiring.
I write a weekly 'new reader' column in the Times on babies; if anyone's interested in being featured message me!

I reviewed the News Agents live at the Royal Albert Hall. I really struggled to understand the appeal. The political analysis did not strike me as original or insightful at all and the jokes (Liz Truss is an idiot etc) all seemed quite obvious.

just finished Death and the Penguin by Kurkov - about an obits writer who accidentally orchestrates his subjects' deaths. Not getting any ideas... though perhaps he is right - autumn is ripe for the picking.

Two days ago I wrote about this fascinating geneticist in soviet Russia who speared an experiment which 'turned foxes into dogs' - basically fast-tracking the evolutionary process. Genetics was branded a "fascist science" and it was nearly shut down.
