Just re-reading your post, and realizing you asked for quick reads.. Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald is a longer read, but quick if the story gets you! (It's a weekend read for me 🤪) The Birth House by Ami McKay is much shorter!
Two that I go back to again and again are Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald, and The Birth House by Ami McKay! They're both set in historical Nova Scotia (where I'm from!) and feature strong feminine leads! If you're an emotional person, like moi, prepare for agony... My mom also loves them!

I did see that SK made changes around animal testing fairly recently, which is awesome! I think my confusion is because they still sell in areas that require animal testing, so they show up on lists of non-cruelty-free brands? But I'm new to this and excited to learn more! More options are better!

I have two autistic kids. Autistic kids can hear you when you constantly talk about what does or does not cause autism. They understand that you're talking about how to prevent more kids like them. Meanwhile I'd like to see a lot more people like my kids replace the people in power.
