-the games try to innovate with their systems a lot. Some of it might be hit or miss (e.g. Persona 5 is a bit on the easy side) and its generally a lot to explain but these games don't skimp out on substance for the most part (Persona 2 is a snoozefest)

Form over function indeed, RetroArch is hella chonky when you start downloading cores and even then you have to configure tons of shit to get it working and EVEN then accuracy isn't even that high for some.
Hell every PSP emulation guide I've read said never to use RetroArch on a modded one ๐ญ

Never used RetroArch myself. It always seemed too much of a hassle to configure on Android let alone an actual PC and the examples you provide outclass RetroArch cores nowadays.
Vehelits in Streets of Rage 2 used to scare me whenever I would watch anyone play that game. I like to think the sounds the boss made contributed a lot whereas the actual design of the boss was ancillary to it all.
