How teacher training could make or break the DfE inclusion plan The government wants more pupils with SEND to be supported in mainstream schools, but most teachers say their training did not equip them to meet these children’s needs

Thinking about SEND, ITT & post-qualification professional development is critical to supporting more teachers to be able to meet the needs of more children. This piece in @tesmagazine.bsky.social by @johngroberts.bsky.social highlights keys points in that conversation.

I long for a system that celebrates all achievement and agree that the current system is so flawed.
One of the main reasons that I love working in a special school is the fact that we can be really innovative with the curriculum and we celebrate everything that pupils achieve.

I've just added a bunch of good people to my SEND starter pack. Still qplenty of room on it, so if you are a SENDCO, a SEND leader, or a SEND consultant, then do wave πŸ‘‹ or say 'hello' to this post and I'll add you.

Calling all school and college staff – can our education system better support pupils with SEND? Time to have your say The national curriculum and statutory assessments for students with SEND need improvement. A Review is underway to identify necessary changes and gather professional insights. This Review is considering how the education system works for all pupils. I believe change can benefit all pupils. For me, however, it carries particular pertinence for many pupils with SEND.

Definitely subscribe to a relational approach. Don’t agree with everything in the book above but aspects of it are at the heart of our practice.
@drlisacherry.bsky.social website has fabulous policy resources to support a trauma informed approach that goes hand in hand with this.

Here we go: as I haven't seen one yet, I'm going to put together a starter pack for SEND people. Primarily SENDCOs (and ALNCOs for the welsh) but also consultants and leaders.
Hit me up please and I'll turn into a pack when there's a few. Rt to the SEND massive.

Just posted new blog on Bluesky and not (yet) on Twitter. Be interesting to see engagement. Will I fold and put it on Twitter too? Please help me avoid the temptation by reposting here!

Lessons Learnt? - Sutton Trust A brief history of school policy reforms going back to the 1980s and how these have impacted on performance and outcomes.

I have a report out today with The Sutton Trust looking back at the huge array of reforms over the past few decades and asking if they've made a difference.

What's got better, what's got worse, and what are the challenges for the new government?
