Can we feed the world in ways that don’t harm nature or disrupt economic stability?
This is the question Deborah Lehr is tackling on the latest episode of Nature’s Ledger. She welcomes @mikegrunwald.bsky.social for a conversation on the global food system's environmental impact.
A graph showing the mechanisms to close the biodiversity financing gap
In just one month, governments spend more on subsidies harmful to nature than they spend on biodiversity protection in an entire year. Policymakers should attempt to estimate the real value of nature and the costs of destroying it.

Climate change demands urgent action, but not at nature’s expense. Yet a troubling trend is emerging: climate policy that unintentionally accelerates biodiversity loss.
Nature-based solutions can serve as powerful economic multipliers, driving growth.

Since the release of the landmark Financing Nature report, the biodiversity financing gap has grown from $711 billion to $942 billion.
We are undervaluing nature, thereby undermining the ecological stability of our planet and threatening our safety, health, and economy. And the crisis is worsening.

The report highlights how ecosystems such as forests, wetlands, and mangroves can be recognized as critical, investable assets, enabling nature to access the same financing pathways as traditional infrastructure through national investment plans, blended finance, and PPP frameworks.
Nature finance is fragmented and insufficient to address biodiversity loss and climate change. To bridge the gap, Unlocking Private Finance for Nature as Infrastructure introduces a new paradigm: treating nature as infrastructure and deploying PPPs for nature as a core delivery model.

Wetlands may often be overlooked, but they are essential to life.
Wetlands store water during droughts, absorb floods, filter pollution and support livelihoods.
This #WorldWetlandsDay, let us honour the traditional knowledge and cultural heritage that have protected wetlands for generations.
💧Healthy wetlands are essential for healthy rivers.
This World Wetlands Day, we’re celebrating the incredible benefits wetlands bring. From improving water quality and reducing flood risk, to supporting wildlife and strengthening resilience across entire catchments.
