Osteichthyans--the bony fishes--are by far the most diverse group of living jawed vertebrates. Two papers out today in @nature.com feature remarkable new Chinese fossils that paint a picture of substantial morphological diversity among stem osteichthyans.

Triste nouvelle du jour. Je viens d'apprendre le décès de Hans-Dieter Sues, un contributeur majeur de la paléontologie des synapsides non-mammaliens. Il était, entre autres, conservateur de la collection de paléontologie des vertébrés au département de paléobiologie de la Smithsonian Institution.

Miam miam, le coelacanthe, un Mawsoniidae, dont des restes furent mis au jour dans le Formation Farak du Niger 🇳🇪 où furent trouvé les ossements de Spinosaurus mirabilis.

Le Niger est le pays d'Afrique de l'W qui est le plus riche en fossiles importants cependant aucun paléontologue est en poste. Ce problème est politique et économique. Malgré cela, le patrimoine paléontologique du pays est doté de très intelligents décrets stricts d'inaliénabilité de tous fossiles.

Ce fut un plaisir de participer, avec des ami.e.s, à l'histoire de Spinosaurus mirabilis, sur le terrain au Niger ou avec la plume.

Rachidatou Amadou Hassane, étudiante de l'Université de Niamey 🇳🇪 peignant une reconstitution d'un crâne de Spinosaurus mirabilis au Fossil Lab @paulserenoofficial.bsky.social de l'Université de Chicago.

Son nom, Spinosaurus mirabilis, le spinosaure admirable. Les restes de ce dinosaure carnivore furent mis au jour dans le nord du Niger🇳🇪, dans des couches géologiques datées d'environ 95 Ma.
