🧵NEW research: How is the Russian state turning young people into patriots via Telegram? Spoiler: It’s not just about war—it’s about influencers.

We analyzed hundreds of posts by two state youth leaders. What we found is disturbing.👇

A new Stalin monument in a Moscow metro station is not just historical revisionism — it is a signal. As Putin deepens authoritarian rule and isolates Russia from the West, the glorification of a dictator responsible for mass terror is no coincidence. Nearly 700,000 were executed under Stalin. 1/2

The research shows the growing use of social media by societal actors to support the mission of state, and in the case of Russia, to bring militarised patriotism further into a young person's everyday experience. (5)

Despite the different techniques Nagornyy & Zanko employ, we found both leaders use Telegram to engage youth with the patriotic projects of their groups and promote a young person's 'active engagement' with state politics as a characteristic of being a 'good young patriot.' (4/)

We consider to what extent these two figures employ social media influencer techniques to engage their audience.
For different reasons, we found:
- Nagornyy does employ SMI techniques✅
- Zanko does not employ SMI techniques ❎ (3/)

The work examines the online presence of Youth Patriotic Group leaders - Nagornyy (Yunarmiya) & Zanko (Victory Volunteers) - on Russian social media site, Telegram, over a 6-month period. (2/)
