Is British politics just ungovernable?
Podcast Episode Β· The News Agents Β· 30/01/2026 Β· 47m
To take the long view on this weekβs madness, recommend listening to this conversation b/t @lewisgoodall.com and political historian David Runciman. Doesnβt cheer you up, but does help you understand (possible tagline for the @newsagents.bsky.social generally) podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/t...

The Good Old Days
Β
Pity the poor children
of today, with their calendars
stuffed with chocolates,
Β
never to know the thrill
of opening a small cardboard door
and discovering behind it
Β
a picture of a bell.

Charts showing data on employment rates over 50 from the last 50 years
It is a great piece. This is the brilliant set of charts I always go back to in conversations about our trend towards working longer, from Jonathan Cribb of @theifs.bsky.social. The length of our working lives over the last 50 years has not grown steadily, and itβs hugely gendered.

This is an excellent Lords Select Committee session - nominally on the economics of ageing - but opens up all the big topics: ageism, productivity, career change, fertility, social care, and the 'nastiest, hardest problem in finance' @csfoot.bsky.social

Following through on a commitment for a review to plan and commit to a timetable for incremental change is hardly kicking business when itβs down today. I know the Government must see that, so I continue to hope that progress proves possible soon.

Clearly there are valid concerns about increasing costs to business. But at the very least that surely neednβt postpone some independent analysis and consensus-building on how & when to incrementally start to address what will be a serious problem for individuals and the state in the years to come.

Rachel Reeves puts pensions review on hold to avoid extra burden on UK business
