To any Democrat who ever said about any issue, "Maybe if we agree with Republicans just this far, they'll stop there," remember that you were wrong, it was obvious at the time, and you really should never believe that again about any issue, ever.
It may not be the most important part of this story. But I sure would like to hear the Erie County DA and the assigned ADA explain the decision to make him plead guilty to trespassing and possession of a weapon, said weapon being the curtain rod that the blind man used as a walking stick.
They beat a blind refugee who speaks no English for failing to obey police commands he could not understand. Then instead of apologizing, they charged him with possession of a “weapon”—HIS WALKING STICK. Then they dumped him miles from home without notifying anyone, after which he was found dead.
Yet again, I (along with many others) want to remind us that THIS is what makes America exceptional. Our openness to immigrants, newcomers, and refugees has been our unique strength for many years...and it's a senseless own goal to walk away from it.
Hej no need to drag the honorable name of IKEA into this with an . . . admittedly evocative analogy. Plenty of US IKEA coworkers are choosing country over Kamprad during this match.
Will it be national news? Will it cause performative outrage? Will he be censured?
Nope. Forgotten by tomorrow.
So many Democrats in DC are terrified of talking about immigration because they have no belief in their ability to affect public opinion.
But that should indicate above all that we need new Democrats in DC.
Elon Musk: For a country to survive, there has to be a common culture. Nobody dies to defend a “multicultural economic zone”! American culture, with its English-Scotts-Irish origin, is great and worth fighting for. Some may not realize it, but that’s why people come here.
Hillary Clinton: "More people were deported under my husband and Barack Obama without killing American citizens and without putting children into detention camps than were in the first Trump term or this first year of Trump's second term."
Gallup poll on immigration Increased: 26 Kept at present level: 38 Decreased: 30 https://news.gallup.com/poll/692522/surge-concern-immigration-abated.aspx
How about trying pro-immigrant? Stand with the Statue of Liberty. To be a magnet for the skilled and striving, which benefits the US as a whole.
Could a party please represent the majority of Americans who want immigration maintained or increased, not only cater to the 30% that want it decreased?
I honestly don’t know. But where I disagree with Dem leadership is this: I don’t think constantly calling today’s Republicans reasonable and responsible is costless.
And “winning the news cycle” matters less in a fractured media environment with a White House that doesn’t care about most Americans.
hello and welcome to the political genius exam. here is question one. which is a more compelling message:
- the president is sending armies to occupy cities and kidnap and kill people and your town could be next
- a meal at the cheesecake factory that previously cost $100 now costs $104.9
Still thinking about how much the McClellan/Lincoln divide relates to the current Democratic Party.
Lincoln wasn’t an idealist—he wasn’t even an abolitionist—but he understood the structural necessities to winning the civil war and restoring the nation and ending slavery was one of them.
Liar
These are concentration camps and its our duty as citizens to ensure these things don't get built.
easy slogan for the next democratic presidential candidate is “i will reform the corrupt supreme court and repeal citizens united”
Good. We’d be in better shape today if we remembered McClellan more. His early savior image, his narrow ability, his towering self-regard, his disgust for his own strongest supporters, his misreadings of enemy strength, his unwillingness to fight. In him we could more clearly see our own leaders.
To my thinking, the term "McClellan Democrats" valuably illuminates the most perverse features of Congressional Democrat's response to the current crisis as personified by Schumer.
It isn't just shorthand for willingness to fight.
Real opening for Dems to run as the law and order party.
So much corruption. So much abuse of individual rights. So much battery. So much contempt of court. Chaos, disorder.
Run as party that will enforce the law against criminal goons.
Of course Dems would need to stop funding the criming, too.
Colombia, Cornell, and Northwestern opted for appeasement instead of standing up for research and academic freedom. The result has been increasing federal control and additional demands.
Harvard—most prestigious, wealthiest US university—fought. Long-term positive for them and higher ed as a whole.
This cannot be something a civilian law enforcement agent is allowed to wear in the US — and an agency that has a culture that tolerates this cannot be saved.
the demands schumer laid out, in light of existing rules and current ICE practices, are not a serious effort at modifying ICE’s behavior in any meaningful sense. they’re an attempt to mollify the base with meaningless bullshit without actually changing anything so they can move on to affordability
This is why I’d vote for Lander over like 98% of current Dems: he doesn’t talk about doing things, he actually does him. Of course he stood up to ICE. Of course he’s getting prosecuted by Trump. Of course he came to Minneapolis. 100 of him and we’d win comprehensively
Trump’s fundraisers are now using the threat of dispatching ICE against citizens as an email engagement tactic.
Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., rolls out his demand for supporting a DHS appropriations bill: fire Stephen Miller
If Democrats haven't announced their proposal for the Donald Trump No Guns in Public bill by the end of the day, they're missing an easy shot
The steel is red hot. This is the time to give it a good smack with the hammer to bend it into the shape you want. But they're too afraid, because every other time they've smacked it nothing has happened except some wrist pain.
gee whiz it would be really great if the opposition party smelled blood in the water right now and went on a full offensive to harness this spark of momentum
NEW: A Texas county medical examiner found that Geraldo Lunas Campos was choked to death by a guard while he was held in ICE custody earlier this month.
Geraldo is the sixth person to die in ICE detention this year.
"Equal obligation" among citizens and government agents to "avoid violence" is a Hobbesian view of governance, the kind explicitly rejected by the Framers in favor of the Lockean social compact. The state is a trustee, the agents fiduciaries, the citizens beneficiaries.
Read a book you dullards.
