And this was all during Walt's life-time mind you. It's actually pretty safe to say that the Disneyland of 1965 was practically a completely different park than the Disneyland of 1955. So Walt himself wasn't at all opposed to the park being changed, despite what some of the more purist fans believe.
I knew Disney made quite a few changes to the park in the early 60's (re-imagining the Jungle Cruise to be more humorous, adding the Tiki Room, constructing what would eventually become New Orleans Square, etc.) but it's kinda mindblowing knowing just HOW extensive said changes really were!
This aerial photo of Disneyland circa 1962 might be one of the most mind-blowing such photos I've ever seen.
Notice anything "off" about it?
If your answer was that practically the ENTIRE west side of the park looks like it's being totally rebuilt, you'd be right!
