This is a good lesson for journalists: Use plain language to state true things clearly.

A striking feature of Trump and his team is: they somehow imagine a world in which they are the only actors, only ones with power, and whether it's Tehran or Minneapolis are surprised when it turns out others do. There are many kinds of power and many nations with power.

Exempt a substantial portion of income from Social Security taxes and raise the cap on those taxes. You'll shift the tax burden away from the poor, toward rich people, and make Social Security and Medicare far more solvent in the process. But that's if you're serious. Booker doesn't seem to be.

What you would do is exempt the first $75,000 in income from Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes, and then raise or scrap the cap on those same taxes. But again, that's what you'd do if you were trying to help the poor and the middle class, instead of help rich people.

This is just wrong. It is wish casting, and attempting to set the narrative, by the oligarch class hoping for more stability than Trump has given them while giving them everything else.

I for one do not like the dystopian fiction becoming reality

The media and academia have an obligation to not remain neutral in the face of authoritarianism. These institutions need liberal institutions to exist in any meaningful way. Authoritarianism is an existential threat. Our devotion to "neutrality" will keep us from fighting for our own survival.
