BRRIAR lncRNA alters breast cancer risk by modulating interferon signaling in cis and in trans

First paper of 2026! We started with 4 genetic variants from GWAS and ended with a potential lncRNA therapeutic for ER+ breast cancer. Spent hours with co-senior author @stacedw.bsky.social bouncing ideas around, discussing results and potential mechanisms. Loved every minute! rdcu.be/eXVnl

Happy new year/paper!

A new tech (scG2P) maps genotype (DNA) to phenotype (RNA) in single cells, bringing together the worldviews of genetic & transcriptional heterogeneity. With scG2P we define how mosaicism drivers increase clonal fitness in the aging esophagus

Just in time for #ASHG2025, a new FinnGen public data release is live!
This release features the first clinical laboratory value association results. Analyses cover 383 lab measurements (OMOPIDs) with data from β‰₯1,000 participants each.

Hmmm...I wonder if the data are uploaded but private. Worst case it looks like PLOS allows readers to make comments, so it might be worth bringing to their attention if they don't fix it soon!

That said, it seems like there's a similar project in SRA already (BioProject ID PRJNA1281840).

A key point here is the disconnect in awareness between researchers and everyone else (of course this is a feature, not a bug, for the government)

β€œ[T]he effects from increases or decreases in funding can take upwards of seven years.”

πŸš€ Today we're launching the 'Night Science Institute', a non-for-profit organization to lead a cultural shift in science! You may say we're dreamers πŸ˜‰, but we think we're not the only ones. Perhaps today you will join us to make the Day Science and Night Science parts of the process live as one!

Standard methods are equivalent to a flashlight, looking at each gene independently. We combine signals from multiple genes, turning a floodlight onto the genome.

Excited to share my first PhD paper in the @sbmontgom.bsky.social lab with @tamigj.bsky.social (www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...)! Standard QTL methods treat each gene independently. But what if a single variant regulates multiple nearby genes at once - what we call β€œallelic proxitropy”? 🧡 ⬇️

My personal takeaways from Dorrestein's talk on microbiome-derives molecules and big data metabolomics:
- should have taken biochem
- I need to dig more into metabolomics
- SCFAs are so important y'all. Eat your fiber
- also bile acids evidently
- dietary assessments suck 1/2

🚨SCIENCE UNDER SIEGE: TRUMP’S FIRST 100 DAYS 🚨

In his first 100 days, Trump has declared war on scienceβ€”slashing budgets, censoring facts, and meddling in research. From climate to cancer care, real lives are at risk.

Here’s a thread on Trump’s assault on science so farβ€”and why it matters: (🧡)

RFK Jr. Set to Launch Disease Registry Tracking Autistic People And he’s using private medical records to make it happen.

Kennedy wants to track people with Autism.

This is a violation of HIPAA.

22.04.2025 18:24 πŸ‘ 331 πŸ” 104 πŸ’¬ 53 πŸ“Œ 9

The US government has dismantled all covid related tracking & reporting despite people dying and becoming disabled every day… Yet they’re establishing a registry to track autism cases and plan to access people’s private medical data.

Autism doesn’t kill. It’s not contagious. This is eugenics

23.04.2025 21:06 πŸ‘ 1452 πŸ” 466 πŸ’¬ 31 πŸ“Œ 11

What Republicans are fighting is literally visual symptoms of disability. Being so different, you're difficult and not helpful to the party. That's eugenics. Autism you can hide is fine. Disability you can't needs to be eradicated.

23.04.2025 01:24 πŸ‘ 112 πŸ” 8 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

The reason autism has such a stigma in the first place is because so many people who have it are able to mask well enough to pass or are just considered quirky by ignorant friends and family. People with nonverbal or profound autism can't and historically are treated as burdens rather than people.

23.04.2025 01:20 πŸ‘ 140 πŸ” 12 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

RFK's sinister autism registry reeks of eugenics and must be fought. That said? Autism is one of the most undiagnosed conditions there is. Only 1 in 4 people who have it are officially diagnosed, and testing is expensive. This cartoonisly evil plan to get rid of autism is dumb on a most basic level.

I don't get why none of the foundations I've written grants for in the last 2 years want to fund me. I try so hard. I get good results. I get a lot done for not a lot of money. I integrate science & art, am good at community organizing, & get science into places where there currently isn't much.

Venezuelan Immigrant Deported by Trump Administration Has Disappeared (Gift Article) The Venezuelan man does not appear on a list of people sent to a prison in El Salvador, and his family and friends have no idea of his whereabouts.

Vance and the pope, Hegseth's signal groups, Rubio unraveling the state department, RFK Jr.'s anticsβ€”it's a lot.

Don't lose sight of the way they are destroying due process.

278 US "deportees" are still in CECOT. They're stonewalling on Abrego Garcia. Others have plain disappeared.

His girlfriend’s aunt Grace Layva says she and her family made numerous calls looking for him before they found out he was being detained in the Florence Correctional Center, which Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses to detain people.

Another family member drove to the detention center, about 70 miles northwest of Tucson, but said officials wouldn’t provide any information or release him.

ICE did not respond to a request for comment about the wrongful detention.

The family later provided officials with his birth certificate and social security card.

β€œHe did say he was a U.S. citizen, but they didn't believe him,” Layva said. β€œI think they would have kept him. I think they would have if they would have not got that information yesterday in the court and gave that to ICE and the Border Patrol. He probably would have been deported already to Mexico.”

A Border Patrol official arrested a 19 yo citizen from Albuquerque in Arizona who didn’t have ID on him, claimed he β€˜admitted’ to illegally crossing the border, abducted + ICE imprisoned him for 10 days, and would have deported him to Mexico if his family hadn’t tracked him down and provided his ID.
