π₯΅ Our energy bills will rise to pay for the Β£408 billion investment necessary for CCS to work. The governmentβs own Public Accounts Committee has criticised the Treasury for not properly assessing the financial impact of CCS on the public.
πΈ If this CCS investment creates the promised 4,000 jobs (big IF!), that works out to Β£5million per job!
π The UKβs Carbon Capture and Storage plans will actually increase our emissions. More than half of planned CCS+gas projects involve building NEW gas plants, which could emit up to to 5 million tons of CO2 annually. Thatβs the equivalent to 2.6 million more petrol cars!
π€¨ Investing Β£22billion of public money in a technology with a track record of failure is NOT going to help the UK achieve its climate goals, or create good green jobs. Hereβs why (thread):
Local currencies could help Global South countries reclaim control over economic policy and respond to the climate crisis.

π€ Would you donate to save the fossil fuel industry?
Nah, we wouldn't either, but that doesn't matter β the govt has already committed Β£22bn and counting of your money to a tech that's meant to reduce emissions but is actually a lifeline for oil and gas.

The UK just committed Β£22bn to carbon capture and storage β a tech with an 80% failure rate that lets oil & gas greenwash their emissions.
At this CCS conference, most speakers repped fossil fuel companies.
