It argues that colonial categorization based on religion institutionalized identity divisions that populist leaders have since mobilized. The paper challenges dominant Western explanations by emphasizing postcolonial contexts as central to understanding populism in South Asia.

We are pleased to feature the following presentation
by Arooj Arif (University of Kent): “Theorizing Populist Politics in South Asia”. This paper examines how colonial legacies shaped the emergence of populism in India and Pakistan.
