Way back in late 2007 an east coast model who I have been admiring and in contact with for a couple years was coming to the area, so we set up a time to do some shooting in my little scrappy home studio at the time. We started with some wild sexy rocker chic stuff then went into some art nude ideas, something she was not known for at the time but she did very well with posing and emotion. This is on tiny example of what we did and this surprised many in her fan base that she can do art nudes so beautifully. I mean heck, she had the figure to do whatever she wants. Kerri is intimidating in her aura as she carries herself in model mode when she is dressed up yet striking in gorgeousness to the point where I was a bit nervous when she met me at my front door, I'll be honest in my recollection. I literally felt out of her league as I did when I first met and shot with Carlotta Champaign. Kerri was/is at that level to me. Once we made our introductions and discussed what to do, nerves went away for the most part until she came out in her first creation of a daring outfit. I don't get completely stunned often during shoots but this was a moment I'll never forget, even my housemate caught a glimpse of and tuned to me with a "you're photographing That? " look... Once we stepped into the garage/studio everything settled and then we got into the creative flow. After a couple costume changes or variations and a break we went into full art nude mode and the rest is history including this image here where I wanted the light to gently fall across her amazing form. Back then all I had digitally reliable and versatile was my Nikon D100. Since I went mostly digital, film is usually not a consideration for a first time photoshoots. Kerri is still modeling and when I can I have hopes to reconnecting with her again after 18.5 years... That would be a special homecoming and definitely an emotional one for me after the results and good time we had that day back in 2007.

From the archive. An impromptu 2x2 photoshoot at a nude beach near me which began as a bikini shoot for both models. Ava, knowing my work wanted to try some nude concepts, I obliged of course being that this is a rare thing for her to do other than the strategically decorated semi-nude work she has done. So yesterday in the early morning hour between 3 nd 4 AM we had a Blood Moon (lunar eclipse) event. As much as I wanted to stay up to watch it and maybe get a new shot, I couldn't being that I'm already sleep deprived. In saying that I knew I already had a decent image of one from the past. This one shot I April 2015 at 4:11 AM. Fujifilm X-E1 with an adapted Nikkor 70-300mm lens. I had bracketed two exposures together to bring out the stars which the moon made easy at this stage of full eclipse. Glad I shot this when I did. Next time I hope to get an 800mm for my high megapixel D850 and get an even better detailed close up image without cropping... better yet a comparable telescope would be nice.

In my attempt to post something on my instagram, I was playing around in my archives and came across my shoot with Kat Love back in march of 2008 back when I was shooting with the now ancient D100, and I have to say the image quality has held up really nicely compared to all the cameras I have acquired since. No wonder so many long time shooters are coming back to these older cameras in 2026. Anyways, this was our first shoot up on the mountains above Santa Barbara and Kat was so fun to shoot with; a pure and accomplished fine art model in the art world, she flowed with one posing idea after another which seemed endless while taking her time so I can compose the best way I can, very much how a emotive musician can chose the right notes at the right time and gently go with the flow. She is to me the David Gilmour of fine art modeling which is why I included an audio accompaniment of Breathe (in the Air) by Pink Floyd in the instagram post. What's crazy is that it was the first clip to randomly come up, as if the algorithm already knew. I just want to add that I am blessed to have worked with some of the world's best models in the art world and each and every one of them are top tier in their own right and the variety between them all will not only improve your photography eye but will also inspire things you thought weren't reachable. If you are serious about the arts, it pays to book a really good professional model... and like me, years will pass and you look back at what you both created and realize that it was not only the best thing you did for your portfolio but an inspiration to continue many years later because you now know what you're capable of doing with great models.

It's been six and a half years since I did this roadtrip that looped the state. Here was one of the last camping spots of that trip. Before the sun rise I made my way over to Mobius Arch to get that one shot I always wanted with the arch rock framing Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous 48 states. Many make the mistake of thinking Lone Pine Peak to the left here is Mt. Whitney but they are sadly mistaken because from the Alabama Hills it looks higher, it's definitely not and the laws of perspective/distance tricks the uninformed because Lone Pine peak is closer and in the foreground compared to the actual Mt. Whiney which stands a good four miles further back as displayed here in my photo with it's serrated edge leading up to the summit. I've summited several mountains but summiting Mount Whitney is still high on my bucket list, but in order for me to do it at my age I would have to start training now for a summer 2027 attempt hoping I get on the lottery for the hard to get wilderness trail permit. Regardless it is always a beautiful place to photograph and explore the nature below it.

Amanda came over to help me with something I wanted to improve on, which is studio lighting quality in terms of nude work and portraiture. Her amazing feminine figure was what the doctor ordered and the main reason I booked her. I was able to apply everything I learned in what I learned in figure study drawing classes over the years in reference to how light works on shapes and contours of the human form and everyday subjects using light not outlines to determine separation of elements of the figure. I could teach a whole course on why lighting is so important to figure work and how every contour and shape directs and re-directs light to form a composition, everything from direct lit areas to shadowing and everything in between and how reflective light works and is the unspoken hero of an image. As in sketch and painting media, the same applies to photography, and not just in nude or portrait studies but in everything we shoot and how to expose for that dynamic range of what lighting we are using or given. I think this is why I preferred b&w photography over color when it comes to nude and portrait work. Spend a couple of minutes studying this image and see what I'm talking about. It's not my best example but quite up there in the purpose of the study. Again a huge thank you to Amanda [where ever she is these days] for our wonderful session. Looking through the files of that day it sure looks like we had such a fun time together getting these images.
