It may sound weird, but when my uncle died, the entire family decided not to tell my grandmother (who had dementia) for that very reason. We all thought it would just be too cruel to have to tell her over and over again that her son had died.
Someone asked if I was ready for the fall and it took me a second to realise they meant autumn and not the total collapse of society.
Of course a real man wouldn't let his mum do the ironing but do it himself!
