More than 180 authors quit writers' week. Many returned for a DIY replacement Constellations emerged from the ashes of Adelaide Writers' Week, which was cancelled after authors withdrew over censorship. Organisers share how it came together and lessons for the future.

We stood together against anti-Palestinian racism and they cancelled our festival. So we organised our own.

Very tired now, but very proud of Constellations!

Great in depth coverage from Hannah Story here

And 10 dingoes were murdered for nothing. Still, this finding is a relief, and if there's anything positive to come out of it, perhaps it will deter others from taking unnecessary risks on K'gari.

This is what we need a Royal Commission on if we're in the mood to call for RCs.

Trump and Netanyahu must be held accountable for these murders! Where is our collective global outrage that 165 school girls and teachers were killed in Iran? It's as though the world has become numb - and these atrocities are now normalised. Imagine if this had occurred in the US.

Same (though through a different research process), though I had learned about the horrors of animal experimentation much earlier in the 80s. No one wants to know, but once you do, it haunts you forever after.

Sorry to interrupt the collective denial, but this is happening, whether we want to face it or not.

It's a great move for QUT, for sure, and it would be even if they didn't have a CW program (because surely one role of university humanities should be to support literary culture). Just saying, the problems re CW programs run much deeper, and this probably won't make much of a dent overall.

I doubt it will do much to help university creative writing, but it's a good and important development for writers and culture. And so fitting for QUT to pick it up.

If you want to understand Australia’s housing crisis, look at what the government funds We are living through the worst housing crisis in living memory. Rents are surging, home ownership is slipping further out of reach, and homelessness is rising and more persistent.

The young woman's end is a true tragedy, and I dearly hope she drowned first, but there is something deeply wrong with the cultural reflex to punish living beings in their natural environment simply for trying to survive.

Best of 2025 - Why Medicare needs joint federal–state hospitals Medicare’s founding promise is failing millions as jurisdictional division leaves patients stuck on waiting lists and priced out of specialist care. A shared federal–state hospital system is the missing reform.

Best of 2025: Medicare’s promise was clear: no-one denied care because of cost. Today, split federal–state funding is breaking that promise for millions. Real reform must start there, writes Graeme Stewart. #Medicare #HealthPolicy #AusPol #PublicHospitals #HealthReform

Censorship doesn’t silence – it amplifies Attempts to silence writers rarely erase them. More often, they expose insecurity, deepen division, and turn targets into symbols of resistance.

Attempts to silence writers often achieve the opposite: they amplify dissent, expose power without legitimacy, and deepen division, writes Raghid Nahhas.

Best of 2025 - OFFICIAL – Israel’s proposed death-penalty law is a war crime Not satisfied it seems with the continued genocide of Palestinians, Israel is now looking to execute Palestinian prisoners by introducing a death penalty law.

If Israel passes this horrific death penalty law, it is yet another reason for Canberra to end its timidity and impose sanctions on this rogue state. #auspol #Israel #Palestinian #Death penalty

I cannot be party to silencing writers, which is why I am resigning as director of Adelaide Writers’ Week | Louise Adler Cancelling the Australian Palestinian author Randa Abdel-Fattah weakens freedom of speech and is the harbinger of a less free nation

A sad and predictable outcome in the sorry debacle that is this year's Adelaide Festival: Louise Adler has stepped down. This is her articulate and powerful statement. She pulls no punches - cites McCarthyism, and I don't think that's drawing a long bow. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
