It's one of those things that it's probably better that you know, but damn if you don't wish you could unsee lol.
Just remember, when the most prolific fighting game developer on the planet wanted people to believe that fighting game characters held no value outside of "functions" the result was a PR disaster that they had to spend the next decade compensating for. People do care about the characters.
Speaking anecdotally only for myself, this never happened to me. I got into competitive fighters because I already loved the characters/worlds and wanted to expand upon my appreciation of them. Fighting game players are not a monolith, but I believe many of us do enjoy "representing" our characters.
