also yes like Anndra says those appointments are not political in the same way as judicial stuff in the US, plus there isn't the threat of being sent to some hazardous to life Alabama jail for 40 years because of a bit of weed or whatever
as someone who's lived in both countries this system makes more sense to me. I'd actually rather have a team of magistrates decide my fate based on clear procedures for low level crimes, rather than a jury who might just not like my face or whatever

Basically lower level crimes are ruled on by teams of magistrates, like I believe this happens if you steal a candy bar or something. Tbh I’m ok with that but should look into it further. Generally here things feel oppressive re: justice system tbh. Not that it’s amazing here either
