Text detailing how MSU isn’t accepting grad applications for astronomy on their website

Sign of the times- Michigan State, one of the biggest astronomy programs in the USA, is not accepting ANY applications for its graduate program this year 😖

There is no reward for centering outreach and education and like I know that. It just still hurts.

I know it’s all a crapshoot and it’s only getting worse but I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t feel so defeating to have applied for so many grants and fellowships in the past four years and gotten literally nothing.

‪If you're a researcher with an NSF grant that has been terminated or with a proposal now stuck in limbo, I'd like to hear from you.

My signal is kvasquez.12. Anonymity is always an option.

Very long shot - does anyone own a copy (or an extra!) of the out of print text “Nonradial Oscillations of Stars” Unno te al. 1989 and would be willing to part with it (paid, of course) to be part of an observatory library that the general public and university students use?

do you have access to a telescope at your university that’s ~0.4m or larger? reach out to me!! our team is putting together a whole earth telescope run and we would like to get more early career and small college observers in on this!

This is one way to make your voice heard that can have a very big impact and only a small bit of your time. The thread even has some suggestions of things you might say if you want/need some help putting your thoughts together. 🧪🎓

how long in your career until you write a proposal and feel good about it 😅 i love white dwarfs but it just feels futile to ask for funding if im not doing wds + exoplanets

Fermilab straight up saying that they will "just follow orders" in their all-hands meeting. "We do not litigate what is right and wrong." Direct quote.

time to write a proposal means time to put on the old ratatouille/cars/shrek loop for background noise

As you said, even a statement about standing with us would be welcome. As it is, we’re hosting our own events and town halls.

Myself and my colleagues (members of our grad student phys/astro org) reached out to members of the department asking for words of reassurance, policies, plans, anything! Nothing received except an offer to come talk or vent whenever we need to, which is what we do for each other already.
