..symptoms were more closely linked to his psychological ones. He suffered from horrible nightmares and hallucinations, mostly of himself as a Lightwarden (though he never actually turned). This resulted in a lot of missed sleep, changes in appetite/vomiting, anxiety, headaches, blackouts/lost time.

I never intended to give Misago (and especially his mother) such a sad backstory, but the second I saw Shiosai I couldn't deny the uncanny resemblance and worked backwards (and forwards) until I had a story that made sense for how and why they ended up where they did.
