Alien, Dune, Star trek, Star Wars, The Magnus Archives, Blade Runner... I could go on. There has to be one that at least peeks their interest.
You catch different fish with different bait (I dont actually know anything about fishing)
The tactic really depends on the person
If it's someone who has no qualms about the rules (possibly becuase they dont know them anyway), look for a game that's an IP that they love. So many things have been turned into TTRPGS. t
Blades in the dark, Agon, Fiasco, or a GUMSHOE game like Timewatch.
And then just be ready to bare the weight of the rules. I say a lot to new players "it's not your job to know the rules to start, you'll learn. Just learn who your character is and play them"
One of the biggest things I see is rules -
"I already know this game, I dont want to learn another one"
To me this is a boring reason anyway, because who is fine only ever playing one board game?
My advice, a "rules light game", maybe something that doesn't have a 100+ page handbook
Mork borg,
(Joke)
Tell them it's a 5e supplement, it just changes a lot of rules!
That's very hard to answer becuase it really depends on why they are hesitant to play new games, becuase if it's someone who doesn't need convincing then advice isn't needed, so there has to be *something*
Trying to get friends to try new ttrpgs and I've very lucky to have friends that are down for whatever bullshit I throw at them
Ill be honest, im not very familiar with any of the controversy surrounding GW but I know that it's all a sketchy fine line concept to begin with
And I'm not in the War Games space, but float around the outside so I definitly can't say anything with certainty
But I do have a lot if experience in
Last point, and id love to hear your thoughts, but hasbro has been a bit shady lately with some of the things they've done in recent years, and I think that turns away a lot of people who want to be conscious of that, and dont want other people to support it. Similar to a Potter/Rowling situation
I 100% agree with you though that the "X sucks, play Y instead" is a terrible tactic to get new players to your game, but I maybe naively believe it's a case of "those who scream loudest, get the most attention".
Of 5e players are to try a new game. Ive heard, and had conversations with people who will say flat out that they refuse to try another game, for whatever reason. Which I think is a disservice to yourself, learning new games can only make you better at playing all games.
There's always dozens of "5e" compatible rulesets/creatures/adventures spanning numerous genres/settings, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but they do not have to be 5e, thats just what *sells*
I also dont think wargamers are as resistant to learning a different wargame then a good portion
My 2 cents
One of my issues with the monolith is trying to force every genre of story/setting into the rules set, when there are other games that do it better.
Warhammer I know has a fantasy setting, but I'm unfamiliar if they really do Wargaming for it.
But if I want to kickstart something new
I'd love to hear feedback or ideas others might have about creative ways to keep players engaged with a story, or remembering important details, especially with infrequent sessions (online using a VTT, in person methods are appreciated, but ultimately not what I mean)
Also, have a little fun with it. It doesn't all have to be super serious, and some od the answers can be obviously wrong. My last question,"what's the most important thing for a Delta Green agent to do", thr answer was definitly not A. Smooch all the unnatural baddies
3 - It allows me to steer the players a little. Maybe they've been focusing on the wrong things, make the questions about the right things. Maybe there is an important detail they found out several sessions ago, but it's been lost in the other information, make it a question! Remind them!
I gave the winner a free increase on any skill under 10%, so not a huge bonus, but something for 1st place.
I was happy with how it shook out for a few reasons.
1 - it just incentivise remembering things, or reviewing notes before a session
2 - Friendly competition is fun
Before our game of Delta Green tonight, instead of doing a "recap" with the players at the top of the session, instead I made a quick 10 question Kahoot quiz for them. It went over well, everyone felt like it was a fun way get everyone back into the investigation.
another robot highlight for 2025: man wearing humanoid mocap suit kicks himself in the balls
Weβre just normal men
This was such a fun game to play, the players all did such a good job and put on such a great show.
Getting the chance to talk to Caleb afterwards about so many ttrpg topics, was just such a blast too.
