‘Bacteria knows no borders. The UK and Fleming Fund must ... The planned dismantling of the world’s largest fund to fight antimicrobial resistance could contribute to millions of deaths worldwide

Prof Lord Ara Darzi, writing in @observeruk.bsky.social, warns that axing the Fleming Fund, Britain’s landmark antimicrobial resistance initiative ( #AMR ), would be a deadly retreat.

With 5 million annual global deaths, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Clinically diagnosed tuberculosis and mortality in high burden settings: a systematic review and meta-analysis Clinical diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), referring to diagnosis without bacteriological confirmation, is common and may affect an individuals’ outcome…

Despite molecular diagnostics for TB, 40% of patients are still diagnosed clinically. We also found a 50% higher mortality in this group, suggesting overtreatment/missing conditions other than TB. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... @imperialinfect.bsky.social @uniheidelberg.bsky.social

Enhanced tuberculosis diagnosis with computer-aided chest X-ray and urine LAM in adults with HIV admitted to hospital (CASTLE study): A cluster randomised trial People with human immunodeficiency virus (PHIV) admitted to the hospital have high mortality, with tuberculosis (TB) being the major cause of death. Systematic use of new TB diagnostics could improve TB diagnosis and might improve outcomes.

How Glasgow's 1957 tuberculosis screening programme could help countries today Visitors arriving in Glasgow, UK, today are met with a city that's undergone massive regeneration, from the colourfully illuminated exterior of the Hydro music venue on the old dockside along the River Clyde, to the stratified medicine cluster that is growing up around the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, one of the largest facilities in Europe. Wind the clock back to the 1950s, and visitors were faced with a city shrouded in smog from factories and coal fires, full of many people living in substandard, overcrowded housing, and suffering from poor nutrition, with World War 2 rationing only ending in 1954.

How Glasgow's 1957 #tuberculosis screening programme could help countries today.

In a 7 country study, we found that urine Xpert Ultra was as sensitive & more specific than AlereLAM for #TB diagnosis in people with #HIV

Also predicts mortality and allows detection of Rif resistance.
